I got this book because I spent two days in Montreal and three days in Quebec city. This book is an excellent guidebook for both city. The maps of each city are easy to read and I did not have any trouble finding my way around the city. This book have some many landmarks and place of interest to see. I wish I had more time to explore both city. If you want a guidebook that will not overwhelm you then look no further.

This was my favorite of the guides. I just fekt like the writers were young and fresh, in spirit anyway, Their excitement for certain items came off the page, even sone "lame" items like Ursuline Convent...they would say this one is set up well, this one is hokey, mazimize time by ferrying out watching multimedia from water. Really felt they had different areas down. Could definitely feel that they frequented some of the pubs / clubs / conventions (I think Mutech?) started as we left. It is jst a very eay to read like your roommate told you where he spent last summer backpacking and all the great wonderful people he met and oh look here is there number and website and they would be delighted if you showed up and said you were my friends.Speaking of that, you may want to add an item. One was a rather cheesy place called Bar-B-Barn by UCAM. Miserable rain, walking around stumble to a very dark, dank resestaurant with old Canadian (Habs) pictures up and a business cadr from every guy who has every been in the place. Paper menu-ribs and chicken. No salad, Our server was great, the food was reasonably good and was $12 pp. Nice, concise, good size for one handed map folding, Really Stellar will look for revised next year.

While the info is good, it's hard to read because there are so many typos, omitted words and blatantly wrong words. That said, the info it contains is much better than the Lonely Planet version of Montreal/Quebec City.

This is a very helpful guide for traveling in Montreal. I used it frequently during my brief visit there recently, and found the information accurate and up-to-date. The only thing that I felt was lacking was a decently sized map of the Metro system in Montreal—that would have been pretty helpful. All in all, a good and inexpensive guide to a wonderful city!

I've used the Moon books before and love them. Gave us great "insider" information about restaurants, shopping, getting around, etc. Will definitely stick with them for future travels!

I LOVE Moon guidebooks. I bought my first one by chance. They are just right for my kind of travel. I do mostly budget with some splurges thrown in. This book has it all and plenty more. Well written, not boring and very hands on.

We love the Moon Handbook series, and we have used the books for Baltimore and Pennsylvania in the past. This book was one of the travel guides we used when we visited Montreal for a week, and my wife said she found this one to be the most useful for things that were a little off-the-beaten-path and for quirky details. It's hard to like a book when you utterly hate the main character, but I guess it's a testimony to the author's story-telling skills that I liked The House on Tradd Street despite Melanie Middleton. For a supposedly uber-successful realtor and respected businesswoman of thirty-nine years old, Melanie is incredibly rude, tactless, and immature. Her specialty is selling historical old houses to her clients, but she describes people who buy old houses to restore as "stupid." Nice, huh? In addition, she thinks all old buildings, even those in residential neighborhoods, should be razed to make way for parking lots and convenience stores. I hated this character from page one. Add in her intolerance (the way she criticizes her best friend's clothes and the fact that Jack has female friends), and the way she treated the dog whose owner died (trying to give the dog to anyone, even threatening to dump him at a shelter just so she wouldn't be inconvenienced by him) and by the end of the book I was rooting for the malevolent spirit to take her out. I won't even go into her teenage-girl-drama temper tantrums, complete with "I never want to see you again!" pronouncements. The fact that she had a crappy childhood didn't even soften my dislike for this horrible woman.If you can get past Melanie the Bitch, the story is a good one. I'll admit that I had parts of it figured out long before the author "revealed" certain parts, but there were still some surprises. The secondary characters are great: Sophie and Chad, Jack and Amelia, Mrs. Houlihan, Melanie's father, even Rich the plumber. Marc wasn't so great, but he was a two-dimensional character, and it's clear he was only thrown in the story to create some conflict. The story could have been told without him and would have been better. I wish we would have seen more of Susannah. It would have been great if she had turned out to be Melanie's grandmother. I thought that was where the author was going when she mentioned the color of Susannah's eyes. I think the author missed a really cool plot twist there.Although I'd like to read the rest of this series, I'm put off knowing Melanie is the main character. I read the first chapter of the next book, and she's still the same whiny temper-throwing twit. I may see if my local library has the books, but if not I won't read them. Melanie Middleton isn't worth the money to buy them.

As others have noted, it's hard to categorize this book. Set in the present time, it's a mystery dealing with lost diamonds from Civil War days and also with the disappearance of a young mother in the 1930's. It's a romance involving Melanie Middleton, who inherited the house on Tradd Street in Charleston, and her two suitors, Jack and Marc, who have different reasons for wanting to find the missing diamonds. It's a ghost story with spirits, mostly friendly, who inhabit Melanie's new house and garden and want to communicate with her. It's also a story of family relationships--of different generations and different times, of people living and people dead--and of the restoration of a historic home in a location rich with reminders of past eras and people who once lived there. Add to that the fact that the story is told in a compelling narrative, and you've got a good book. Yes, some of the romantic developments are a bit exasperating, and one aspect of the mystery is rather obvious, but I still had a lot of fun reading this book and I intend to look into the sequels. I would definitely recommend it.

I love Charleston, have family there, and my sister-in-law's name is the same as one of the streets referenced in this book. Unfortunately, Ms. White needs to go back to writing school, as this book is sloppily written, with poor construction and trite cliches throughout. To cap it all off, neither she, nor her editors bothered to learn that Mayo Clinic is in Rochester, MN! May she never write "due to the fact that" again! I'd hoped it would be an amusing summer read. Don't waste your money or your time.

Melanie vehemently denies that she sees ghosts but that doesn't stop her from seeing them.As she begins to restore the home, with the assistance of Jack Trenholm who is a writer in need of a book idea, her best friend Sophie who is a quirky college professor whose specialty is old Charleston homes, and Chad who is one of her clients looking for a house.Trying to solve the mystery of the disappearance of Louisa Vanderhorst leads to another mystery. A Vanderhorst ancestor might have hidden some Confederate diamonds somewhere in the house. Melanie could use the diamonds to help restore the house but a descendant of the man Louisa was supposed to have run off with - Marc Longo - is also on the hunt for the diamonds.Besides ghosts, this book has tangled family relationships. Melanie's father, who turned to alcohol when Melanie's mother left, has been named the trustee of the money left to Melanie to restore the home. Melanie has long since learned that he could not be depended on. Also Melanie's mother has been trying to contact her but Melanie has written her out of her life.This was an excellent and spooky mystery with a great setting and intriguing characters.

Well written, but the heroine is totally a petty '39' year old 'juvenile' and comes across as a spoiled 'gosh my life didn't go the way I wanted' brat. Enjoyed the premise, but would have at least liked to have liked the lead character . Sadly all the other characters put up with her crap, instead of telling her to get over it and move on. I am reading the second book and she is still being the petulant 'poor me, I'll never forgive you and I'll hold my breath until I turn blue' immature' child/woman'. Was hoping for more as her childhood trauma was explained in the first book. Her attitude is not necessary for the plot to be interesting, sorry I purchased the second book.

As many other reviewers have stated, this is one of the only ones on the market that treats the abuser as a damaged human being rather than an irredeemable monster. I was lucky enough to be married to a woman who agreed to give me a chance to change my behavior, she also agreed to read this book with me. Through the exercises and conversations based on the material in the book, we came to a much deeper understanding of what the other was thinking and feeling and began communicating much more effectively. But the biggest breakthrough came when, after reading the chapter on personality disorders, she looked me in the eye and asked "Do you think you have borderline personality disorder?" I didn't want to accept it at first but the more I read, the more convinced I became. I have since been officially diagnosed and undergoing treatment and for the first time ever, I no longer feel like my life is spiraling out of control and toward inevitable... well, let's just say that I probably never would have realized what was going on with me had I not read this book, and the realization most likely saved my life.

After reading Beverly’s book I decided it would be helpful to explore why I had allowed myself to stay in an emotionally abusive marriage for 11 years. I also wanted to know how to deal with my husband until I could divorce him, and how I could heal from this trauma. When I found that Beverly offered therapy by phone I thought I had found the perfect therapist. As you can imagine, I was scared, confused, and my self-esteem was at an all-time low. My husband and I were having serious financial problems and I was facing potentially supporting my mildly special needs child on my own after being out of the work force for 13 years. Many things were said, but I’ll give you some highlights. From our first session, Beverly seemed kind but at the same time slightly irritated with me. It was confusing but I could not understand why on earth she would be irritated with me. Surely I must be misinterpreting. Our third session she blurted out that she never gets irritated with clients but she was irritated with me. I talked too much and got off topic. I didn’t pause long enough after she made a point. She didn’t understand what I wanted from the sessions. During another session, she asked out of the blue if I thought I was beautiful. She was trying to understand where my sense of entitlement was coming from. Another time she insisted on talking at length about why I had not been more successful financially at my previous career. The unspoken conclusion was that I was a failure. That's how we ended the session. She spoke to me like I was a child. I found myself considering staying with my abusive husband after It had taken me a year to muster up the courage to decide to leave and she was slowly chipping away at this. I had anticipatory anxiety before our sessions, afraid of not pausing long enough after she spoke, saying the “wrong” thing. I was anxious and crying a lot. Confused. I was feeling more and more hopeless and losing my willpower. I finally realized what this women was doing to me. She is still very much an abuser and should not have a license to practice.

This book blames the woman for the abuse she receives from her partner. The last thing an abused woman needs is to be told that it is her fault for the abuse, then list ways in which she can change her behavior, in order to stop the abuse. Absurd!

Engel places a lot of blame on the parents, which is not true in my case, and at times she seemed trying to convince me that I was incorrect about that. However, this gave me a lot to consider and good tools to use in my relationships.

This bookChanged my life. I recommended it to many other people and they said the same thing. It blew our minds. This book is one of a kind in that it doesn't assume the abuser is male. If you're teetering on the fence, just buy it.

illuminates the abused and the abuser. both parties should definitely give this a go. will really open your eyes to behavior you had no idea was abusive. highlight or take notes. if you've been through this sort of turmoil, you should have this book in your house and refer to it as needed to educate yourself or others you love.

I liked the blurb when I read it and I found this book to be intriguing, entertaining, mysterious, and in a few areas puzzling. The cast of characters were interesting. There was a bit of information that is provided off and on of the main character's backstory which helps create even more intrigue. I felt a few things were written very well but can't list them without spoiling the story for others. I also found a few things to be a bit too convenient to the story near the ending and thought writing more scenes for some of these characters would have added more depth to the story. I was surprised at the ending which gave me the feeling this book was really a prequel to the real story. Just the same, I'm all for strong woman characters and even better as spies. Looking forward to more.

Full of suspense and mystery. Action packed and with twists in each of the turns in the story line. Great, fast paced plot and fantastic characters. I'm probably equally confused as the main heroine who doesn't know whom to trust. So it is better no to trust anyone. Is it so easy to do while truths we believed all our life seem like not existing? What about connection to other people? Are relationships possible in this environment of half truths, lies and betrayal? Great beginning to the new series and I hope for more as now I'm left hanging and wondering what is next in the store for Henley.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
