As a professor and former compiler writer, I'm a big fan (and owner) of compiler books (including those by Aho, Ullman, Goos, Waite, Wirth, ...). The last years have seen a resurgence of really good books covering modern compiler engineering. This one (first and, gladly, second edition) is by far the best in its class. The contemporary competition consists of* Aho/Sethi/Ullman/Lam: nice book, great follow-on from the earlier dragon books, but is so thick that it's tough to teach from, and to be honest, it's getting convoluted.* Allen/Kennedy: another great book, covering some of the best results in optimization (of well behaved languages like Fortran). It is, just like the latest dragon book, heavy slogging and not digestible by many students.* Muchnick: yet another excellent book, but it hasn't (AFAIK) been updated.By contrast, this book (Cooper/Torczon) is not only digestible (nice presentation, not overly terse), but it also covers new and interesting algorithms and data-structures. This applies not only to today's hot topics like optimization (and related data-structures like SSA) and code-generation, but also to front-ends. For example, the chapter on lexical analysis covers Brzozowski's minimization algorithm. (As a specialist in such minimization algorithms, it's very encouraging to see compiler writers/text book authors now embracing such an easily taught algorithm.) All in all, a very nice book on modern compiler engineering.

Upon opening this book, you might be a little off-put. The font and format are a little odd, and there are page-long algorithms in slightly archaic pseudocode ("endfor", etc.). However, I found it be a great introduction to compilers.I felt that implementation details of some of the algorithms were a little specific, but they also thoroughly discussed the implications, strengths, and weaknesses of each method. It was therefore easy to read the general overview and analysis of a technique, skipping the sometimes tedious implementation. Then, when implementing certain algorithms, you can flip back for techniques and tips. The sections on abstractions focus mostly on object orientation. Languages like Haskell are not discussed, and Lisp (which, to be fair, is interpreted in its traditional form) is only given a passing mention. This is justifiable, though, as features like currying are generally considered advanced topics. I would have liked to have seen more of it, but I can't complain about its absence. The title of the book may be the best concise description of its content. If you want to *make* a compiler and simultaneously understand how it works, this is a strong choice.

This book is pure theory. The title didn't convey this to me.If you haven't yet created your own compiler, then I would look elsewhere. The best bet would be too get "Brinch Hansen on Pascal Compilers", which contains a small amount of theory but heaps of code (fully commented and understandable) which you can easily digest and then modify for your custom compiler. The compilers I've written (based largely on Hansen) used the "top down" method, which can easily be coded by hand. Although a great introduction to compilers, there is not much discussion on bottom-up parsing or code optimization. The first half of the book reviewed here was a good refresher for me about compilation techniques. I could follow it easily, but I knew most of the material beforehand (from Hansen). The other part was different because it explained bottom-up parsing well. I never "got it" when reading the Dragon book or others. So, I was impressed by the first half of the book. The second half is about optimization. The topics here were either briefly mentioned in Hansen (but no implementation was given), or else were absent. Hansen's approach was to use a stack-based machine, which is simple to do but not good for optimizing code. In this new book, the authors don't use a stack-based approach, but rather a register approach. This allows for lots of types of optimization. It's heavy going. There are some diagrams, but not enough for me. Pseudo code was given to explain each optimization technique, but there were always special cases that threw a spanner in the works. I liked the constant summaries, but when I faced the questions at the end of the chapters, I quickly realized I hadn't digested the material fully! I also realized that I'd never be able to implement the optimizations from the pseudo-code presented.I learned that there is almost an infinite numbers of combinations of optimization code. This shows that there will always be areas of research in compilers. I got stuck in a lot of places, but still got a good understanding of optimization theory. Many techniques were written in acronyms to save space, but I kept forgetting what the names stood for, and that hindered my learning. For a single-semester course, Hansen's book is better, as it's practical. This new book would be a great way to consolidate your knowledge and let you prepare you for further study, or research. There are other books on optimization, but this one has enough topics and theory for me!It's a good book, but I've taken a star away because I feel it's too theoretical.

Great book, the authors are very knowledgeable on the subject of compiler design and theory. This book is structured better than the dragon book. Which shouldn't be a surprise that UC Berkeley is using it in their curriculum.

Great book for a compilers class, especially upper level undergrad/new grad student. I would not have survived building my own compiler for my class had it not been for this book. I also have a copy of the dragon book but I read this first and learned from it therefore I have a bias towards it.

I grew up with the first edition of the Dragon book, a fine book for its time, especially when coupled with YACC and LEX. Lately I've been contributing to LLVM and I needed something a little more up to date as a refresher. To that purpose, Engineering A Compiler, second edition, is an outstanding modern text. It uses a pleasant+simple pseudo code for its examples as opposed to Java or C++. It's emphasis is on English text and it reads well. I'd put it on the Hennessy and Patterson shelf.

Good for theoretical understanding, slightly aloof for practical implementation.

Deception on the Set NARROW ESCAPE 1 FRANK I TRUDGED FORWARD AS BAYPORT burned around me. Draped in tattered clothing, I was part of a long line of refugees who looked beaten and hopeless shuffling through the destruction. I felt the heat from flames erupting from storefront windows. Blackened and wrecked vehicles littered the street and sidewalks. The dreary procession veered around a smoldering upturned delivery truck in the middle of the boulevard. I couldn’t believe how my once-beautiful downtown Bayport had been transformed into a postapocalyptic wasteland. Just a week ago, everything was normal. Winslow Pharmacy’s huge plate-glass windows were intact instead of in shattered pieces all over the sidewalk. The Dollar Hut was full of shoppers and without flames erupting from the front doors. Sickly sweet instrumental music filled the air in Sal’s Diner rather than the buzzing of downed electrical wires. All this mayhem happened in just a short week. Right after they came to town. “Unreal,” whispered my brother, Joe, as he lumbered along next to me. His blond hair was almost black, and his face was covered in soot and ash. Like everyone else, Joe wore ripped, threadbare clothing. “I never thought I’d see Bayport like this.” “No kidding,” I murmured. I glanced around at the long line of refugees, many of whom I knew. I spotted some of my classmates and friends, including Eric Watts, Amanda Paul, and Hector Cruz. Even my chemistry teacher, Mr. Watson, wore a torn and stained blue blazer. Mrs. Sally Gertz, owner of Sal’s Diner, didn’t even look up as she passed her smoking restaurant. All of a sudden we heard a scream. Something was happening at the back of the procession. Then, another scream. This one was closer. Everyone picked up the pace. I looked back to see a commotion in the distance. The people at the end of the line were pushing forward, running from something. “You think we’ll see them from here?” asked Joe. “I don’t know,” I replied. My stomach knotted with excitement. I knew I was supposed to be frightened, but part of me wanted to see our pursuers, couldn’t wait to catch a glimpse of them. More screams, even closer. The sounds of terror were mixed with primal grunts and growls. Everyone around me moved faster, and I found I had to jog to keep up with the pack. Yet I couldn’t help glancing over my shoulder for a glimpse of the creatures terrorizing them. Terrorizing us! This time I caught flashes of them. Not so far behind us I saw biting teeth and skeletal claws swiping at the crowd. It was a good thing I looked back. “Oh!” cried Mrs. Gertz as she stumbled and fell to the ground. I spun around and pushed against the charge of frightened people. All the while the screams and growls grew louder. When I reached Mrs. Gertz, I slipped behind her to shield her from the oncoming crowd. The screams surrounded us, and the rush tripled to a panicked stampede. Grabbing her arms, I helped the woman to her feet. “Thank you, Frank,” she said with a smile. Then her eyes focused on something over my left shoulder. She shrieked and then dashed into the raging river of refugees. Something clamped onto my left shoulder. I spun around to find myself face-to-decomposing-face with . . . a zombie! Milky-white eyes stared back at me through pronounced eye sockets. Gray skin stretched over bony cheekbones and pulled away from grinning yellow teeth. Black liquid oozed over its bottom lip as its mouth opened wide, ready to take a bite. I felt another one grasp my right arm. It jerked me away just as the first undead creature lunged forward. I stumbled away from the first zombie and spun to confront the second. But luckily, it wasn’t a zombie—just Joe. “You want to be a zombie snack?” asked Joe. “No way!” I replied. I stumbled into a run as Joe and I followed the fleeing refugees. A glance back showed a horde of the undead in pursuit. They moved faster than I expected; a few almost kept pace with the escaping mass of Bayport citizens. This was amazing! Despite the chaos, I couldn’t help smiling with delight. A loud burst of static filled the air. It was followed by a tinny voice amplified over an electronic megaphone. “And . . . cut!”

Frank and Joe are extras in a movie being shot in Bayport featuring zombies that someone is trying to stop from being made. That is the entire plot in one sentence.Frank gets a little distracted by the lead actress who starred in as a kid in a show Frank used to watch. He's predictably clumsy around her and Joe does his share of good natured ribbing. That ends with a healthy dose of humor mixed with reality. There is a lot of detail about actors' make-up, masks and stunts, which are all central to the plot. Remembering one of these details enables the boys to escape the explosion seen on the front cover. The writing is good for this type of book. The alternate chapters read like two different people. The dialogue works. If the boys and some of the characters are a little too nice to be real, keep in mind these are written for a much younger demographic. Although there are a few mean people and one or two who don't come off as all that trustworthy. In contradiction to the only other reviewer, there is indeed action in this installment. The scene shown on the cover and the capture of the criminals are the two major action events, but there are others. The mystery was not as good as the book after this, "The Curse of the Ancient Emerald", and I found one of the things the brothers did to catch the criminals unexplained (no spoilers, but it had to with which disguise each wore), but it was clever. I found the movie making details interesting and think kids will as well.

Being a girl, I thought it was a little gory sometimes, but very good mystery. I didn't expect who the perpetrator was, or perpetrators, but it definitely made sense. I would recommend this book to any teenager who loves mysteries.

My 8 year old grandson loved The Hardy Boys book.

Great item

This hardy boys book is boring. It's not like the other books in the series. The way it's written I felt like I was reading nancy drew. There is practically no action in this book, just typical hardy boys action.Don't buy this book.

I love love Lauren Oliver and the Replica series is so unique and interesting. They are like 500 pages but I devour them. Ringer is just as fast paced as Replica. I love the two different stories. I always read Gemma first, and her story is always my favorite. I do enjoy Lyra’s story too. This story was just as fun and intriguing as the first one. Lauren Oliver never lets me down.

I was having a reading competition with my daughter. Both of us finished Replica (Also very good). I ordered a copy of Ringer for both of us. Every night we would call each other to see where we were in the book. We both agree this book is fantastic. The ending clearly leaves room for a third book in the series.

Love this book, I purchased it after reading Replica, I would recommend to anyone. The dual feature of two stories in one from different perspectives is amazing.

Good book and interesting having two perspectives and two ways to read it. I enjoyed it. Not my favorite book but i still enjoyed reading it.

Very good, the ending very exiting

Good ending to the story!

This sequel is emotionally intense and a bit too much explicit sexuality for my daughter. It was even a bit intense for me. That said, the characters are engaging, the complications believable, the narrative is tense. But I was so sad upon finishing, I cannot say I enjoyed it.

Book was missing 30 pages!

One definition of insanity, quoted in Todd Fisher's book, is "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result." And as we read along, that quote is brought to life by the never-ending Sisyphean efforts on the part of Todd and his mother to find a home for her expansive collection of costumes and scenery scavenged from the ashes of MGM. Debbie and Todd keep pushing that rock up the hill and, just when they're about to make it to the top and realize their noble quest, something happens and the rock, loosened from their grasp, tumbles back down that Hollywood hill, plunging them both into temporary despair. "Temporary," because we are reminded that the word "can't is a verb not in their vocabulary, and we find ourselves saddened at each failed attempt to find a home for Debbie's now-disintegrating MGM collection. Everyone from George Lucas to Warren Buffet tells them to sell, sell, sell, but this is also a verb not in Debbie's vocabulary. They press on, putting themselves into debt to the tune of millions of dollars in the process. This scenario happens again and again until finally the reader begins to anticipate the next catastrophe. Todd does everything he can to help his mother recognize her dream of a Hollywood museum. He admires his mother's single-minded pursuit of a home for the entire collection, and understands her desire for it not to be dispersed piece-meal to the four winds. Had they been able to concentrate on this one thing, perhaps it might have turned out better for them. But throughout the book, Debbie is consistently sidelined by husbands stealing her money while Todd is called off on a regular basis to save his beloved sister, Carrie Fisher, from destroying herself as she deals with the ramifications of her bipolar disorder. Todd's portrayal of "his girls" is filled with love, compassion and understanding. They could not have asked for a better guardian. He works as hard as he can to hold both of them together, at times sacrificing his own personal life to do so. This was a thoroughly readable, at times riveting, book and I couldn't get through it fast enough. Todd, who looks like his father before Eddie turned "Asian," is also, thankfully, his polar opposite when it comes to familial responsibility. The love for his girls is so admirable that when things work out in the end the reader breathes a big sigh of relief. Well done, Todd.

I wasn't sure I wanted to buy this book. I am so glad I did. Todd Fisher writes with great care and compassion about these two women in his life.It is well worth the read. Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher meant a lot to me. Todd Fisher should be proud, he wrote a lovely book.

Just started reading Todd's book and it's one of the best biographies I've read. The flow is great, feels like we are sitting one and one and having a conversation. It's a very intimate portrait of a life lived with two amazing, legendary women. I appreciate his candor, and Todd sharing his perspective with us, even allowing us a more in-depth glimpse into their lives by granting access to his personal archives of photos and videos (available on his website). You can tell he is a very genuine, caring person who was trusted implicitly by his mother and sister. What an incredible, unique life this family lived. I can't imagine the devastating loss and tremendous void left with their deaths so close together. I highly recommend this book.

This is a MUST HAVE for all fans of Debbie or Carrie! Todd writes so lovingly of both his mother and sister. You can tell he cared for them deeply—and he is such a good story teller and writer. I could not put this book down! I read it in less than 9 hours. A terrific read, and very touching. You definitely won’t regret buying this book. I was so excited to get it, and had high expectations and it did not disappoint. Thank you to Todd for sharing “his girls” with us one last time....

I laughed and I cried. Todd Fisher did a great job allowing us to view "his girls" objectively. I have always admired Debbie Reynolds the most and I took away what a fighter and a great spirit she had. She was provider, protector and sole bread winner most of her life for her children (and many others) and she never backed down...even to punching a few times. I do see her as a tad too permissive with the kids; ie Todd brings home a tank (a real one) and prays (literally on his knees by his bed), she will let him keep it. His mother witnesses this earnest prayer in the doorway and says "Really? You're praying for a tank"?? I laughed so hard I had tears in my eyes. (He got to keep the tank). A few times I may have agreed with grandma Reynolds of thinking her daughter lost her compass. But Debbie was under a lot of pressure and stress with teenage children to support and she was flat broke. Tough time for her and feeling a failure between the broken marriages and their impact on her and her kids. Todd gave a more tender insight into Harry Karl, DBs second husband. Basically a loving good guy but had addictions that destroyed everyone around him including himself. His description of Mr. Karl taking Todd with him to father/son batting practice was classic funny. I take it he was an "indoor" kinda guy. Also nothing good again about Eddie Fisher their father. He seems to be self centered and selfish and only interjects himself if there is something in it for him. Carrie is still a contradiction as well. Todd said she could be the sweetest, most kind and generous person and on the turn of a dime turn on Todd and say vicious cruel things and be thoughtless. She took advantage of her mother and mom didn't tell her "no" way beforeshe should have. But Todd is the hero of their lives and the best man they ever had. He was there for his mother all the time and for Carrie as well. He was the anchor with the great heart I believe he got from his mother. Thank you for sharing this with us Todd. You're tops in my book.

Todd -you did your mother and sister proud! I am sure your mother would want her fans to know just how proud she was of you and how strong she had to be so many times in her life. And how close you and Carrie were growing up-- yet how different she was from both of you. I loved your style of writing and found the book hard to put down. I commend your warm tribute to both these women who you were privileged to grow up with
