Review

“Impassioned, hugely informative, wonderfully controversial, and scary as hell.” ―John le Carré“Bold and brilliantly conceived . . . Klein may well have revealed the master narrative of our time.” ―William S. Kowinski, San Francisco Chronicle“This is a brilliant book, one of the most important I have read in a long time.” ―Howard Zinn“Klein provides a rich description of the political machinations required to force unsavory economic policies on resisting countries and of the human toll. She paints a disturbing portrait of hubris, not only on the part of Friedman but also of those who adopted his doctrines, sometimes to pursue more corporatist objectives.” ―Joseph E. Stiglitz, The New York Times Book Review“A brilliant, brave, and terrifying book. It's nothing less than the secret history of what we call the 'free market.' It should be compulsory reading.” ―Arundhati Roy“Pulls the curtain back on free-market myths and exposes the forces that are really driving our economy . . . Klein's book is powerful and prophetic. . . . A brilliant dissection.” ―Arianna Huffington, The Huffington Post“Naomi Klein is one of the most important new voices in American journalism today.” ―Seymour M. Hersh“The Shock Doctrine is the defining, covert history of our era.” ―Jeremy Scahill, author of Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army

**FYI** Please note to the best of my knowledge I am NOT related to Naomi Klein.**If you wonder what happened to the middle class, why poverty is on the rise and what the economies in a democracracy, dictatorship and "communism" have in common, you'll find lots of food for thought in Naomi Klein's THE SHOCK DOCTRINE. Tracing the rise of the "Chicago Boys" laissez-faire economic beliefs, their impact on South America, China, Russia, Poland and South Africa and how it impacted their form of government, Klein makes a compelling argument for the flaws in Milton Friedman's economic science.Naomi Klein's book looks at the conflict between Milton Friedman's "laissez-faire" approach to business and government where business is largely unregulated running itself and government is little more than a bare bones system. According to Klein, Friedman believed that the economic theories he espoused would be perfect and that any problems with it would be due to outside forces interferring with his free market world. His approach was in complete contrast to Keynes who believed that the prime mission of politicians and economists was to prevent unemployment and avoid a depression or recession by regulating the market place. People like John Kenneth Galbraith (heir to Keynes' mantle)believed part of the purpose of economic regulation was to keep our captalist system fair and prevent a small group of businesses from dominating the market. Galbraith also believed in bills like the Glass-Steagall act which created a firewall between Wall Street and various banking institutions (which former President Clinton helped to eliminate). The net result would be to prevent recreating disasters like the Great Depression and 1929 stock market crash (the current version of which contributed to part of the economic mess we're in today). It's the conflict between these two economic philosphies that allows our economic world to thrive. You'll have to decide for yourself how accurately she reflects each man's philosphy based on what you know about each respective philosphy but I found, for the most part, that the book gave a pretty accurate summation of the benefits and issues at the core of each, as well as which classes benefit the most.Klein suggests that "disaster capitalism", i.e., introducing radical changes in terms of economic and government policy when a country is in "shock" (taking advantage of the fact that massed resistence is unlikely to that change), is allowing the rise of unchecked multi-national corporations that take advantage of and damage our society in the process. She suggests that Friedman's beliefs that the market will manage itself and that free market capitalism undermined the Soviet Union is an idealized and naive belief. The impact for good and bad is that a business functions like a plant. If it receives too much sunlight and water, it will overgrow and strangle out everything else in the economic ecosystem. The net result would cause the system to become unbalanced with human suffering and economic disaster as the result if left unchecked. She traces a parallel path between the rise of Friedman's economic philosphy and the rise of human rights violations, rise and fall of various governments throughout the world and the opportunism of the business world to exploit it.She ties all of this together looking at the economic policies and beliefs that are reshaping American society--for good and bad--into a different society where the gap between the wealthy and the poor continues to expand and one where the free market society is being radically retooled. The result is a society where the rich grow richer and the poor grow poorer. The pressured middle class continues to shrink. This undermines the foundation of our economic growth. This book will probably divide those along the more extreme political lines but has the ring of truth nevertheless.Klein crafts a fascinating book. Although some of her observations might be a bit of a stretch and her arguments occasionally flawed, she provides compelling evidence to support her thesis and connects the dots of events that might otherwise appear to be unrelated. Whether or not you agree with Klein or are outraged by her evidence, you'll find plenty of food for thought in her book.

This is a very good book indeed. It is powerful, eye-opening, and disturbing. Kline gives a gripping narative for the most part. I say for the most part because sometimes the narative seems repetitive. The book also appears to be well documented.Naomi Kline paints a picture of how the corporate world, neoliberal economists, and polticians worked to take advantage of communities and countries in shock because of some calamity—political, economic, and natural. They move in and inact free-trade, drastric cuts in govenrment, reduced taxes (for the rich), dump price controls, and deregulation. These changes benefit no one except the rich, the poltical leaders, and foreign corporations, who are aften one and the same. The poor in these places go from worse to worser. The book begins with shock treatment experiments funded by the CIA with possible applications to interagation. The idea was to wipe a person brain clean. They also developed sensory deprivation, and thus acting together to destroy the self to be built anew. The next preliminary topic is the Chicago School Economics led by Milton Freedman at the University of Chicago which developed neoliberalism, which to me is a misnomer, seeing how it is a very conservative doctrine. The book, then moves on to the historical picture to see how these ideas were practice in the real world outside of the academy. South America is presented with the shock of political upheaval, starting with Chile. Also in South America, it discusses the debt crisises that occurred following the ouster of strong arm governments. It covers Poland, Russia, and South Africa with their peaceful transfer of power with the economic shift inserted in with little notice, putting the poor in dire straits. It also goes into United States' shocks. One is the Iraq war after 9/11 and the privatization of war. Privatization is also shown to be at work in the hurricane Katrina disaster to the detriment of the New Orleans poor. Coverage is given to the Asian Tiger's financial currency debacle and the recovery from the Tsunami that hit many coastal areas in the Indian ocean basin in 2004.In the last section, Kline does hold out some hopefulness, as she describes people's efforts in recent years to counter the neoliberals and corporatists to take over of many country's economies.I recommend this book, especially for those who have a concern for the poor. Front cover a bit misleading. It should clearly indicate the inside drawings are not merely lovely crosses, but have writing on them. Not what was expected.

Only one cross was attractive to me. The one shown on the cover,

Have really enjoyed this - very nice pictures to color. My only complaint is that eight pages are wasted with blank crosses to "doodle" on.If I want to "doodle", I can draw a blank cross for myself instead of paying for someone else to do it.

ONE picture stands out...with the cross, heart and leaves. The cross is the best part. But too many tiny leaves that will not get colored in my book. Some of the pictures I would not have placed a cross with those items.

The best thing about this book that it was hand drawn by children in youth groups. I was very impressed by their drawings. :)

It was not exactly what I thought it would be, but it's nice.

Very nice designs and fun to color. Very relaxing. Coloring the different cross designs gives you a peaceful time. My favorite adult coloring book. Worth the money spent.

It was a gift for my daughter and she loved it. She especially liked the crosses in the back you can design yourself.

I received this book today and read it cover to cover. It is absolutely beautiful. Chloe Frayne writes the most wonderful poetry that hits me in all the feels.I can't see a scenario where everyone does not feel immediately connected to the writing. Been in love? Been heartbroken? Been in a difficult situation where your head conflicts with your heart? Frayne articulates all of this so well... she articulates life.I just want to read these poems over and over and over. Her words soothe me and transform me into a romantic, sappy dreamer. Gush. Just perfection.

I discovered Chloe Frayne on Instagram, and knew I needed to own an entire book by her. This book did not disappoint. I truly believe Chloe is one of the best poets of our generation. Her mix of modern and classical techniques, and fearless dives into raw emotion makes reading her work an unique experience. I highly recommend this book, as well as follow her on Instagram for more daily posts. Truly thought-provoking and transformative work.

I was told in an Instagram post that if I ordered this and sent the author proof of purchase that she would send a signed copy. Didn’t hear back from the author and the poems were trite. I ended up donating the book to Goodwill.

It was hard to read on kindle at first. Its hard to tell which line belongs whete so that was disconcerting but once I adjusted, I got used to it. I’ve always loved Chloe Frayne’s simplicity and sincerity in writing.

Chloe has the most beautiful way of writing. It really touches my heart. This book is a must read, over and over, again.

Amazing writer. She writes with her heart. I can relate to a lot of her poems, and sure many people can too. Some really touched me.. I’m looking forward to get her other book!

Some of the best magic in this world is trapped in books. This is definitely one of them. Emotion oozing from the page and imagination, opening up the universe to your thoughts. Utter brilliance.

Loved this book! Very relatable for me personally :)

Could not put it down; read until my eyes closed, and picked it up again as soon as they opened. Excellent writer and researcher who went well out of his way to create this and left absolutely no stone unturned. A brilliant work. Books like these inspire me to be a better editor.

Dead Mountain is a well-researched, and respectful book about the Dyatlov Pass incident that took the lives of nine young Russian university students in February of 1959. The mystery around the tragedy is an engrossing one that has been much sensationalized over the years. Film-maker Donnie Eichar cuts through the sensationalism to present a sober investigation into what really happened. At the height of the Cold War and Soviet Union power, ten students of the Ural Polytechnic Institute Hiking Club took off on an expedition to Otorten Mountain in the northern Urals. All were experienced winter hikers and mountaineers, especially their leader, Igor Dyatlov. When they failed to return after three weeks, a search was launched. The initial search party found their empty tent and no sign of the hikers. All indications were that the tent had been abandoned in panic. Then, after some weeks of searching, the bodies were found."Their bodies were eventually found roughly a mile away from their campsite, in separate locations, half-dressed in subzero temperatures. Some were found facedown in the snow; others in fetal position; and some in a ravine clutching one another. Nearly all were without their shoes." (p 23)One of their group, Yuri Yudin, had turned back, well before the tragedy occurred, due to a bout of pain from his chronic rheumatism, making him the only survivor. So what could have happened to drive these young people out into a dark night of howling winds in below-zero temperatures? That’s the mystery that has prompted horror stories about the incident and that drives the narrative of Dead Mountain.I have to admit that the mystery as outlined in the book blurbs grabbed my imagination. I had never heard of the incident and so wanted to know what it was all about, and why it was little known in the West. The book’s author, Donnie Eichar, is a director and producer of film work for MTV. He also became enamored with the story and determined to resolve the mystery. His research led him to literally retrace the hikers’ steps into the Urals in winter. He was the first American to do so.Mr. Eichar’s prose is well-written and keeps up the tension of the mystery as he takes us with him on his investigation. The narrative alternates between his research and the story of the hikers as recorded in their group diary and photographs. These photographs are readily found on the Internet and I referred to them often as I read Dead Mountain. Many of them are included in the book.Through the diary and photos the hikers are revealed as smart, well-adjusted young people with a love for life and the outdoors. Their last hike was to earn them a certification that would allow them to teach mountain hiking. So they knew what they were doing. There was one 37 year-old among the group, but the rest were all under 24. They were interested in two-way radios (the geek equivalent of personal computers for the time), hard science (they were engineering and physics majors), and the possibilities for love and romance (especially the two young women). The photos show a lot of college-student clowning and the diary indicates their excitement for their adventure. Accounts from the people that encountered them along their way are all positive as to their demeanor and attitudes.Tension builds as Mr. Eichar recounts the groups’ final expedition. He tells us enough of the hikers’ personal lives that we get to know them as individuals. We feel their youthful friendships, hopes, and concerns. We struggle with them as they work out the logistics of their trip, and feel the pathos in Yuri’s early parting with them, expecting to reunite in a week’s time.Tension also builds in the account of Mr. Eichar’s own journey to retrace the hikers’ steps and so gain clues as to what happened to them. He has to deal with a language barrier and his own journey logistics. Being from Florida, he has little experience of mountains and none of sub-zero cold. On top of all this, he makes a search for the lone surviving member of the Dyatlov group, Yuri Yudin.I found Dead Mountain to be engrossing and hard to put down. Mr. Eichar keeps his prose moving, interesting, and relevant. Internet photos enhance the book, but I found the autopsy photos disturbing. The driving force of the book, however, is the mystery: what happened to hikers? UFOs? Yeti? Bandits? All have been proposed as solutions. After examining all the evidence he could gather, Mr. Eichar comes up with his own idea about what happened. The last chapter of Dead Mountain is Mr. Eichar’s reconstruction of the events of the hikers’ last night. The scenario he describes is, in my opinion, probably very close to the truth.I think Dead Mountain is a good exercise in how to approach and to think about a stubborn mystery, especially one with paranormal overtones. It indicates the kind of open-minded work required to get to the bottom of things (whether you think Mr. Eichar did or not). In the end, it is a reminder of the tragedies in this world, and of nine promising young people who were taken out of it much too early.

By no means the definitive book on the Dyatlov Incident, so I'm not sure where all these 5-star reviews come from. Do yourself a favor and read the 3-4 other reviews by people who know what a well-researched book should look and sound like before you purchase.OVERALL: The book does a nice job humanizing the members of the group, however chapters are split between the Dyatlov group's trip, and the author's own trip back to Russia to research it. The author is very much the "star" of the narrative, and 50% of the book is the author's own journey in Russia, so be warned if that's not your thing!I didn't mind this at first... and found the first 60-70% of the book fairly well done (in the way a Reader’s Digest article about something fascinating can suck you in), but the author finishes his journey at the site of the tent...and that's about all the insight you are given into his personal experience. Did Eichar sleep on the mountain? No. Did he explore the location of the cedar tree and the ravine? We are left to assume no. Did he partake in any kind of scientific analysis or measurements of the area? Nope. So even the "personal narrative" aspect is unresolved. Not to mention Eichar rode a snowmobile to/from the location...not exactly similar to what the hikers experienced.THE THEORY (spoiler alert!...not that it matters, really): The book simply ends with Eichar putting forth his own theory about the cause of the hikers' demise: infrasound. And it comes across as so rushed and with such scant supporting evidence, you are left unconvinced and disappointed. We should believe this because a scientist in Colorado noticed that Kholat Syakhl has a dome-shape?The author does not provide even a single real-life instance in which similar mountain weather conditions have caused human beings to behave in this manner (i.e. being driven so "insane" by a vortex/infrasound they would cut through/abandon a tent, and walk a mile away from it barefoot in the snow), or ANY other real-life cases of a vortex + infrasound occurring in winter mountains. There is not a single interview with any individual who has first-hand experienced this phenomenon. There are also no interviews with area hikers to inquire if such a phenomenon has ever been experienced by any other local camping on Kholat Syakhl.THE LACK OF EVIDENCE:-no map or diagram of the area of the tent, the cedar tree, ravine, and positions of the bodies-no in-depth discussion, pictures, or diagrams of the footprints found in the snow (yet Eichar insists in his theory the hikers were split up into 3 groups and separated BEFORE reaching the tree line. What supports this? A discussion of the footprints, how they were found, logged, and photographed by the search team would have been critical.)-no autopsy photographs, diagrams, or comprehensive description of the injuries found on each hiker. I find this omission the most egregious. Eichar asks us the accept his version of events, without describing how it aligns with the specific injuries to each hiker (these photos are readily available online, so why the laziness in omitting a discussion of them?)-no photographs, detailed discussion, or first-hand accounts by search party members of the "ravine." What did it look like? Why does Eichar automatically assume that 3 of the hikers fell into the ravine when they had limited bruising/soft tissue damage? He presents no specific evidence yet states Kolya was being carried?-no mention or discussion of the "ice cave" made by the hikers and found at the ravine, in which wood had been gathered for a fire that had never been lit?SUMMARY: I began by thinking this was a fairly well researched book, and certainly Eichar has put in a some time to interview surviving family members as well as the expedition's "sole survivor," but make no mistake, this is a humanistic (essentially amateurish) account of this fascinating incident, and not a scholarly or scientific one.The book has no citations and no bibliography, and Eichar's quick summary at the end of what he thinks happened reads like lazy armchair detective work. This amazing story deserves a much better book.

I thought with the pictures it would be easy reading for a ten-year-old, but it's a little more difficult--which is okay. This is one of six history "comic" books I bought for use over the summer.
