It would be foolish to make a trip to Hawaii without consulting this guide first. You couldn't possibly know the nuances in the climate changes from place to place and time to time, along with other seriously important details without this guide. For instance, I would never think to ask details about the type of helicopter I would be flying in if I were considering a helicopter tour. Can you talk to the pilot during the tour? Will the glare on the glass prevent you from getting great pictures during the flight? Which helicopter company has the best equipment? Before looking through this book, I think I would have let the price be my guide. Not wise! This is better, and I don't think there's another guide like this either. I shopped it. This guide tells you about the best ways to get around and stay comfortably on your budget, where to see beaches in privacy, and how to avoid the typical tourist traps. The book is well designed, separating East, West, North & South so that you can distinguish the Hawaiian places from one another and have a pretty good idea of where you are when a name comes up. If you read the whole thing, you'll think you're fluent in Hawaiian. In addition, it's great fun to read while you dream about your bucket list vacation. Great pictures too!

We have used the 7th edition for two trips to the Big Island and will use the 8th for our next coming up. I have the 7th on my phone and will cross reference between the two for day trips where I can only use the phone. The series is a one of a kind travel guide and sets the bar for all others to achieve. Doughty and his crew have really done their homework and the guides are written in a fresh, non boring, conversational style, inserting his sense of humor and personal Aloha for the islands throughout. In my opinion, this is the best guide for the Big Island, bar none. All the others I have purchased stay home when we go. Every aspect of your trip is covered whether you be a blatant pay for all tourist, a do it yourself adventurist, or one caught somewhere in between.

Nowhere in this guide is it ever mentioned that the big Island is suffering from a serious problem: Coqui frogs. They are not native to the island and where certainly not an issue 15 years ago. Now, unless you close the window AND put ear-plugs in your vacation will be without sleep. That would be worth mentioning don't you think? I advise all travelers to do their own research since there are parts of the island where the frogs have not spread quite than dense.Most of the small islands are apparently ok since they took care of the problem early but I think the big island is in serious trouble now. Again I don't think it's right that a serious problem like that is just swept under the rug.90db is like a lawn-mower - noise pollution, and not a Hawaiian forrest experience. Judging on how many places in Hawaii this travel guide gets mentioned, I completely get why this is not brought up in this book.

I would like to personally thank the authors for this book. It was our bible during our two week Big Island visit. Such great tips, and such fun reading it. I had to laugh out loud several times. I deeply enjoyed the humor. I would recommend this book as a first choice to everyone visiting Big Island. Our vacation appartment offered other travel guides and someone even left one alternative guide in our rental car, but we never looked them up. There was simply no need for it. This book has it all. It is organized both by regions and by activities. It is easy to find things and it has up to date information. It also comes with a great background about the Hawaiian culture and with big respect for nature. A lot of insider tips as well. You can tell that the authors really visit (and revisit!) the locations.

the Hawaii Revealed books were recommended to me from a friend who travels to Hawaii every few years and knows the islands well. She insisted I buy these books for Kauai and the Big Island saying that no other book comes close to these and now I have to agree. It's easy to read and after what she told me about trusting their reviews I can see what she means. It's not a frivolous travel book out to please hotels and restaurants with nice reviews so the writer can get freebies. they have gone to such lengths to give you so much important detail it's hard to believe they could experience so much. Since things change so much in just a few years...new hotels, restaurants, and other features, it's always good to get the most up-to-date travel books. I believe these came out in 2016 or 2017. The maps are fabulous and so helpful and easy to read...very valuable. It's very user friendly and they even offer an app you can download that will coordinate all the book's info for you on your phone or lap top as well. haven't yet done that but I think it's a really neat feature. Still just getting to look through...there's so much to read, but already I've been able to make a list of activities and experiences I want to do.

Much as this book is an academically in depth and eloquently written work , it's sections that deal with repair and adjustment are at times inadequate if not misleading . I refer particularly to the tips and advice regarding the adjustment of the verge- crown wheel escapement that in truth can be the cause of no little grief to even the handiest of people if it is slightly damaged or out of adjustment, as is frequently the case . While it is of small import that Mr Seymour describes incorrectly , the crown wheel variation in which the teeth point upwards as the " inverted " crown wheel , rather than the more common designe with the crown wheel with teeth pointing down ( an inverted crown ) . His assertion that to achieve balanced pallet depth by bending the " potenc " laterally is a totally erroneous piece of advice ! Other really useful tips and adjustment observations seem absent from this work although others are well made ! I still would defend this book as a must for Morbier clock lovers , just be wary of its total merrit as a workshop guide !

Not a big book, but it appears to be very well done, and well illustrated with large photos of various Morbier clock movements. A nice book for an overall look at the style and character of these clocks, as well as a general history of them.

I love my clock, I love it I love it I love it! However this particular style of clock had a very loud chime/gong! Itâ€™s part of the charmðŸ™ƒ.

Most of these animals vanished in the biggest extinctions since the dinosaurs, when humans arrived in America around 10,000 BC.The second Lost World was home to the incredible wildlife that evolved after the Pleistocene Extinctions: unimaginable numbers of bison, pronghorn, horses, bear, wolves and coyotes. Now that I know that Dan Flores reads these reviews I'll be sure to write one! haha! Seriously though; great book. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who has ever pondered what this continent was like thousands of years before ANY human settlement to now. I learned who Dan Flores was through the Meat Eater podcast(highly recommended also). It's interesting to hear about hunting from a different angle that even non hunters can enjoy. It's full of actual facts that seem to not favor a pro or anti hunting audience. Cant wait to start on Coyote America.

Dan Flores writes with a style that personalizes the science of the Great Plains and makes its beauty and unique character accessible to the reader. His ability to return the reader to the plains of early America, teaming with grizzlies, wolves, pronghorn, buffalo, and other large species and explain their historical place reminds us of how special and beautiful the plains once were. His advocacy for rewilding some part of that vast expanse is better understood thanks to Flores' recitation of the past glories of the "American Serengeti". The biological richness that once teamed on the plains is now starkly contrasted by the emptiness of what is often referred to as "fly-over country" today.Well-researched, using material from biologists, archeologists, and primary historical sources from those who traveled the plains before the loss of the mega-fauna, Flores' work represents some of the best environmental history on a region neglected by scholars as much as modern travelers. None who read this work will drive through that region again without wondering at what we have lost and might, with serious commitment, regain

I began this book with low expectations, looking for what it said about the now-extinct Plains megafauna that thrived until the end of the Ice Age, 10,000 years ago. But I was increasingly drawn in for other reasons, especially for its picture of what was there as recently as the early 19th century, before the profuse modern wildlife -- bison, wolves, bears -- was largely extirpated, and the rolling grassland replaced by agricultural fields. What a wonder it must have been. Now most of that wonder is gone, converted into boring mid-country cropland to cross between East and West. I read the print version but wish I had it on audio the last time I drove across that landscape.

Really a great read. It is hard to fathom all the killing of wildlife that took place in the 1800's but it's a story worth telling and it should be done accurately. Hopefully too, people will read this and become inspired to support a national park that is truly oriented to our native prairie and all of the natural wonders that one called them home.

This is a very well-written and engaging look at what is considered flyover country for many in North America. It is not only about the wildlife we still have among us in the Great Plains, it is an examination of the super-regionâ€™s movement through the past 10,000 years with the coming and current presence of mankind. I can not recommend this book enough for those slightly to sincerely interested in our Plains and prairies.

Superb book for anyone who loves wildlife or the Plains or Yellowstone. I can't recommend it highly enough, if only for the first chapter which gives a wonderful overview of the vast history of the area. Unique type of literature about animals and terrain. Surprisingly entertaining and compelling reading. Lots of data without being dry. Great stuff. Read it after my vacation. Wish I'd read it beforehand.

Not really what I expected. I bought this as recommendation from a family member. I should've googled Kiyosaki first. I would've saved myself hours of reading. The book does present some interesting ideas, but rather than actionable content, it's filled with a bunch of questionable or vague stories and rhetoric clearly meant to persuade readers to sign up for his seminars.

If you've ever read any of Robert's other books then you have read this one. The more I learn about investing the less his books seem to appeal to me. The retelling of Rich Dad's stories is very repetitious and boring since the same stories are reference several times throughout the book and chapters.I'm sure that I gained some nuggets of information from this book however it could have been condensed into a much shorter book. Robert often talks about the value of your time, lesson #1 don't read this book if you value your time.

this book was suggested to me by a friend who makes $12 million/ year. It was the first book I read by Robert Kiyosaki and serves as a great motivational book to put you in the right mindset to want to learn more. However, his methods mentioned in this book are outdated in the sense that his "passive income" is now taxed heavily. Like all of his books, the first half is strictly trying to change your mindset and the second half talks more about how to pursue your goals. There's nothing in here that makes you completely ready to go pursue the goals you make while reading this book, as goes for all of his books. It serves strictly as motivation and it takes a lot more reading, studying, and talking to the right people if you want to carry out the plan set forth in this book, especially in today's economy. If you want to learn what it takes to become rich, read this. If you want to become rich yourself, you're going to have to do a lot of independent research outside of Kiyosaki's teachings. Great motivation though and I've read lots of other books to get me where this book wants to take me

This is one of his best books. It is filled with actual information and the perspectives on money, assets and liabilities but in particular what it means to expand your horizon to create money out of nothing but effort.

It is more of a motivational type instead of informational type of book. I was looking for more of a informational type book.

Different financial outlook. One has to make their own decisions as to what their risk tolerance.

One of my MOST favorite books. Sapolsky writes very personal reactions and observations about the baboons he is studying, adds wonderfully dry wit and acknowledges his own shortcomings and eccentricities while teaching you a wealth of information about these animals. He also injects interesting commentaries about some of the local tribes he interacts with in Kenya. I bought and read this book years ago and loaned it to a friend, who never returned it. I so enjoyed the book the first time that I recently bought it again. Enjoyed it even more the second time, now my husband is thoroughly enjoying it, too. It is definitely a five star book!

RS had the wonderful privilege of observing and collecting data on his favorite type of animal. Sounds and read like heaven to me.I read a lot of the one star reviews and laugh. So the editing is bad, the book is isn't a text on the natural science of olive baboons, nor is it a good travel guide. It is the story of a guy with great curiosity towards nature, especially primates. Whether he is writing about baboons, his neighbors or himself he looks with the same curious, tolerant, distant observations that any good reporter or scientist brings to their work. Some get upset with his term "blacks" as if he also didn't use the term whities. lLOLSome reviews cast doubt over he could have really had these experiences, but any astute observer of this crazy world we live in knows truth is satisfyingly bizarre all on its own. Writing like this is the most entertaining of non fiction.

The author is absolutely entertaining, and this book is very informative as well as endearing. I had a passion for primates prior to reading this book, and after finishing the book I can say with 100% certainty that baboons are my favorite primate! The author illustrates these animals beautifully, and you likely won't be able to tear your eyes away from the book. I also watch/listen to Jordan Peterson, and I tend to recall parts of "A Primates Memoir" when JP talks about the "dominance hierarchy." I can't recommend this book enough!

This was an excellent book about Baboons, Humans, Maasai tribesmen. Parts of the books make you laugh others make you weep. Robert Sapolsky has the knack taking you into Africa while you are sitting comfortably in your air conditioned home. Strongly recommend a second read

Great book! I was assigned this book to read for class, but I would highly recommend reading this just because! It is a great look into the world of primatology, and Saplosky does a fantastic job of introducing us to the world of baboons. Over the course of the book, not only did I learn many different things about baboons, ranging from their hierarchy to the issues they face in terms of conservation, but I also became emotionally attached to the characters in the book. I highly recommend!

I read the Kindle version of this book, and although the book itself was a great journey through one scientist's study of baboons in Kenya (and along the way, a study of both the people of Kenya and other parts of Africa and the author's own evolution from young student to fully mature adult), the copy editing of this book was so bad that it caused the flow of the book to be damaged. Either missing or misplaced apostrophes, hundreds of typos (do they not use spell check when transforming a text into Kindle format?), including misspellings and garbled words, really interfered with the enjoyment of this book. The price, over $10, did not excuse this unprofessional presentation. At least if you buy the physical book, you can share it with many people. Not so the Kindle version, and I was appalled at the bad copy editing and the fact that Amazon would not be embarrassed to release it like this.

Last year I stumbled on some photos of baby gorillas. Then I went down to the zoo to look at them. Cutest little buggers... And somehow, from there, from reading about gorillas, I stumbled on baboons. And found them, and their ways, even more interesting. I'd read several other books on baboons, before coming on this one...and what a joy this was to read!This was like reading about baboons, if Mark Twain had been doing the writing: the author's eye for humor, and his willingness to describe accurately, not just baboons, but also the people he came in contact with: he spares neither them, nor him, nor our own modern day sensibilities. I was laughing out loud, at him, at the baboons, and my own preconceptions.I don't give five stars, but this was just too good. I got it on Kindle, and liked it so much I just got through ordering a new paperback edition from Amazon. I didn't need it, and I'm kind of mobile in my old age, but I wanted this in my bookshelf, probably right next to my old Bukowski short stories ;-)A great book, and a writer I will now follow avidly

This book popped up in my Kindle list of recommended books (I assume because I live in Kenya and have bought many books on various topics related to Kenya), and I am so thrilled that it did!Well I absolutely loved it! I laughed and I cried. I could relate to so much of it as I have spent a great deal of time visiting the game reserves here. I also enjoyed reading Robertâ€™s stories of his interaction with the Masai and other local people â€“ all of it very accurate and very amusing.I see in earlier reviews people stated that the Kindle version has many typos. This has obviously been corrected as my version was perfect. Someone else also stated that the picture on the book cover was a mandrill. Well it isn't at all â€“ itâ€™s very definitely an olive baboon which is the type of baboon found in Kenya.This is truly a wonderful book. Highly recommended.

Unable to support his family, John Macdonald deserted his wife and young son. The boy had a difficult childhood, made bitter by his mother's possessiveness and her cold, critical nature. He was shunted from relative to relative like an unwanted dog. He emerged from his hellish childhood with a determination to become a successful man and to ALWAYS honor his responsibilities.He ended up at the University of Michigan, studying creative writing and literary criticism. He also married early. Margaret Millar was a fellow Canadian who brought her own demons to the marriage. Neither of them wanted children, but birth control was difficult and a doctor talked them out of pursuing an abortion. The presence of daughter Linda Jean sealed their marriage. No way was Kenneth going to abandon his child. But it also created additional tensions as Ken Millar struggled to go to graduate school and support a family. Meanwhile Margaret struggled to combine childcare with writing. Her writing took priority over her child and always would.With her husband's help and encouragement, Margaret became a successful mystery writer. After serving in the Navy, Ken Millar settled his family in southern California and became a mystery writer himself. He adopted the pen name "John Macdonald" (his father's given names) to avoid confusion with Margaret's books. This book gives fascinating insights into the development of the mystery genre during the last half of the 20th Century. The author says that she spent ten years collecting her information and I believe it. It's one of the most DENSE books I've ever read and one of the most informative.If you're a fan of the Ross Macdonald books or if you're interested in writing and publishing, you shouldn't miss this book.

Nolan has done a truly masterful job of offering us Kenneth Millar, without ever once inflicting any kind of authorial (hence subjective) opinions on the material.As someone who, to this day, can remember many of Millar/Macdonald's exquisitely crafted lines and scenes, and who loved both his work and that of his wife Margaret Millar, it was a wonderful experience to read this book. Since they were so integral to each other's lives, author Nolan has wisely, and quite fully, included Margaret in this biography in order to give us a full perspective on their life together--a pair of (ultimately) enormously successful writers who happened to be married.Margaret comes across as a clever, difficult, quite damaged woman, often hiding behind throwaway quips and quite caustic remarks; not at all sociable, undeniably gifted, and possessed of a humor that was frequently cruel.Millar, on the other hand, is shown to be, first and foremost, a generous, thoughtful, kind, and immensely gifted man with a fine, fine mind. His long struggle to achieve the success he so richly deserved is, in some ways, very contemporary; in other ways, it's reflective of the times (the late 40s through the late 70s).Rich, too, in physical detail, what I particularly liked was Nolan's comprehension of Millar's sense of being an alien in America. Despite his American birth, having grown up in Canada, Millar brought to his life and to his work a kind of interior chill that is so very much a part of Canadian life. A very tricky thing to describe, yet Nolan does a masterful job of highlighting the difference in sensibilities between Canadians and Americans. It's no small achievement. We Canadians are not Americans, but articulating why--and defining the cultural niceties--can be exceedingly difficult.To learn that a mind as fine as Millar's is destroyed, ultimately, by Alzheimer's is achingly painful to read. To "see" the man begin to falter and then fail is harrowing and, finally, heartbreaking. Millar redefined the mystery genre, bringing it forward into the mainstream of literature with consummate skill and a peerless talent. Nolan does his subject proud. This is a book that would, undoubtedly, have pleased the shy and unpretentious Millar enormously.Read every Ross Macdonald book you can find. This is a thoughtful, literate and very entertaining biography of one the the 20th century's most elusive and fascinating writers. Mr. Nolan approaches his talented but tormented subject with great empathy and insight, while providing a sharp picture of the mid-century literary scene; of the hot-house of wealth, waste and seductive pleasure that was Santa Barbara in those years; and of all writers' love-hate co-dependency with Hollywood. The sections of MacDonald's warm relationship with Eudora Welty are especially rewarding - and surprising. A fine book.B. Paul

In the opening pages of this reference work, Peter Davidson tells us about his friend who defined an empire as "murder, incest, and the wearing of expensive jewelry!""There is the image here both of glorious conquest and of power held over far-flung lands, and indeed this captures something of what we have come to mean by the term 'empire,'" Davidson observes, "But how, then, does empire come about, what forms can it take, and does it have a defining characteristic?"These are the questions he attempts to answer as he compiles information about most, if not all, empires that have arisen and collapsed throughout world history.He begins by dividing up his work into nine main chapters, beginning with early civilizations formed when the social construct of empire was a new concept. The first chapter, entitled "War and Peace", examines the contention between Sumer and Akkad, the rise of Egypt, how the attributes of a military society like Assyria could not achieve stability without advances in administration like those developed by the rulers of Babylonia, and how religion was used to forge unity between disparate peoples by the kings of Persia.Chapter two focuses on empires of the classical world including Greece and Rome, as well as Alexander's conquests, the Parthians and Sasanians of Iran, the Mauryas and Guptas of India, and the Qin and Han of ancient China."The story of Rome is one of adaptation," Davidson points out. "The early growth of Roman power sprange from a zealous and rapacious republicanism that eventually threatened to destroy the republic itself. Unlike Athens, however, Rome restructured to resolve the tension between republic and empire. Subsequently, Rome began to resemble the Persia of Cyrus and Darius in the measures it took to cope with its increasing size and multiculturalism."In chapter three Davidson leaves the ancient world behind and concentrates on what he terms "Empires of Faith", the Byzantine Empire, the Holy Roman Empire, and the Abbasid Caliphate."All the classical empires found ways to supplement control by force with a measure of consent delivered by shared beliefs," Davidson explains. "As the classical world crumbled and people looked for something to hold on to, however, religious ideas promising salvation exerted a stronger pull than political ideas such as citizenship."Empires of the horse take up Chapter Four as Davidson examines the conquests and achievements of the Mongols, the later empires of the Chinese beginning with the Sui and ending with the Qing, Muslim India with the splendor of the Mughals, and the Ottoman Empire."The horse made light work of invading Eurasia's agricultural civilizations but building empires was another matter," Davidson points out. "The steppe riders faced the usual tribal problems of creating a larger community. They also faced the dilemma of what to do with the societies they conquered. If they destroyed they gained little. If they bent themselves to an alien way of life they stood to lose their identity."Chapter Five looks at what Davidson terms "Empires of Isolation." Three empires are examined here including Mali, the Aztecs, and the Incas. Davidson observes that the empires arising in Eurasia were ultimately linked by trade and religion but such was not the case in sub-Saharan Africa and in Central and South America. And yet, spectacular empires arose even without the use of iron and steel, draft animals or even the wheel, in some cases.Chapter Six looks at the first global empires, Spain, Portugal, the Dutch, and both Britain and France in the Americas."Managing such far-flung empires was a new challenge," says Davidson. "It was partly a question of money. To squeeze profit from the silver mines of Peru or the nutmeg trees of the Est Indies, ships had to be built, voyages that could take two years had to be financed, and things had to keep going at home."Chapter Seven examines the conquests of Napoleon, the development of Tsarist Russia and the rule of the Austrian Habsburgs."As much in opposition to French occupation as in sympathy with French ideals, national independence movements sprouted across the continent," Davidson observes. "The age of the nation-state had arrived, with first Greece, and later Italy, Germany, and others finding their modern form."The imperialism of Britain and Japan are examined in Chapter Eight."By the 1870s, nationalism had become as much a force to serve imperial ambitions as to incite independence movements. A second industrial revolution now gave Continental powers the chance to compete with Brtain, and , as the 19th century drew to a close, a single global empire gave way to a feeding frenzy for colonial possessions ending in the First World War," Davidson states.In the last chapter, entitled "Empires and Utopias" Davidson looks at the U.S., the Soviet Uniion, and the European Union. In it, Davidson says each of these entities were ultimately searching for a better world but with the world defined differently to different people with widely disparate histories.Like any good atlas, this one is full of maps I found extremely helpful in understanding the migration routes of various groups that conquered or influenced specific civilizations. There are other illustrations of cultural art and architecture. Davidson also includes an index and suggested readings.Davidson does a good job of defining and describing key cultural characteristics of each empire and the inherent challenges their leaders faced. He also astutely defines the strengths and weaknesses of each and how these either helped it to achieve greatness or resulted in its ultimate decline and destruction. You will not find descriptions of specific battles or a comprehensive discussion of each emperor's reign. Davidson limits even the most complex empire to about four to five pages including illustrations. But, I think this reference work does an excellent job of providing an overview of peoples and forces that have shaped our world.

This should be required reading for every student in the U.S. Its no wonder it wasn't available in the States when I purchased it I'm sure the folks in goverment don't want us to find out they are repeating the same mistakes of past empires.. Get it read it and pay it forward to your friends.

This is an excellent historical and geographical review of empires from Sumer to America. Itâ€™s very comprehensive on time and space, necessarily sparse for each specific instance.
