About the Author: JR Cummins lives in Portland, OR and has been an avid boater since building his first kayak for a seventh grade shop project. Fifty years and many used boats later his decades long obsession with dragging his wife and children to the San Juan’s has resulted in this guidebook. From one Boater to Another: We first came to the San Juan’s and surrounding area armed with a few old car traveler type guidebooks, and a chart. After five sailboats and two powerboats, the same, now tattered, chart is folded in its second acrylic cover, we are still making the rounds, and enjoying every minute. Over the years we have zeroed in on boat camping, gunk holing, and exploring whatever we can reach by water. Our intention with this guidebook is to share our knowledge with other boaters. We have concentrated on “where†to go and “what†to see. You will need to supply the “who, what and why.†The pictures displayed are of family outings, and were chosen to convey the proverbial “one picture is worth a thousand words." The readable, large garish labels plastered across the map at the front of this guide are to help you stay oriented and locate all the parks and places to visit. This is a well written and informative book, but it has one major flaw, which is a significant lack of detail. It is nice if you want multiple reference books, and it is also fairly small so you can bring it along on your trip on the plane. However, I HIGHLY recommend "The San Juan Islands", (New, Revised Second Edition), by Anne & Laurence Yeadon-Jones (part of the "Dreamspeaker" Cruising Guide series). This guide has all the details you need, along with many very detailed drawings of harbors and anchorages drawn by Laurence himself (I think). It provides clear warnings and recommendations on the safest way to approach harbors that are a bit tricky. The approaches to Roche Harbor are a good example, and Lopez Village is another. The photos I provided are of Friday Harbor (taken from shore very close to the Whale Museum, which I recommend!!), along with a shot of the Catalina 42 MKII that we chartered in a rather tight docking situation which we fortunately negotiated without incident (on our first bareboat charter!). Following other recommendations I have read on Amazon, I agree that purchasing an up to date Waggoners Guide for the Puget Sound region is essential. It has VERY accurate maps of all harbors and marinas, which is very useful in planning your approach if you are docking (sometimes the Marinas are very busy and you may not get immediate response on the VHF radio when you are asking which side to tie your fenders on, etc.). The only minor negative of "The San Juan Islands" is that some of the harbor/marina map drawings are out of date, Rosario Resort being the main example I encountered. This is not a big deal but it does matter for a newby Bareboat captain. By the way, for a newby, I recommend tying to a mooring buoy at Rosario, as long as you have a dinghy. Rosario is great and I recommend it highly, but due to fairly consistent southerly breezes coming up the East Sound, docking a sailboat can be challenging. Last but not least, unfortunately the Dreamspeaker guide book series is not easy to buy on Amazon at a reasonable price, but, all is not lost, they are available from the same outlet that sells the Waggoners guides online (just do a quick google search and you will find it). Have fun and happy Cruising in the San Juan Islands, it is worth it !!!
The book was written by someone with much experience to lend to us newbies. I am sure we will have questions and will have to find answers on our own, but it is a very good place to start. I wish that I could print out a page or two to add to our agenda file of places to visit. I guess I will have to get out my pen and paper.
Good and helpful information for spending time in the San Juans. Due to storm we didn't get to sail but the Guide helped us find plenty of other interesting things to do!
Super impressed, PERFECT guide for the San Juans for sailing or power. We used this guide extensively from pre-trip research to the time we left for home. The only thing I would disagree with the book on was the comment on "reasonable" prices within the islands. 2X I don't consider reasonable, bring all the groceries you need.
Excellent for a first time cruiser. Cuts through all the overly detailed larger cruising guides to help focus you on the best places to go. Very helpful rating system for anchorages and shore excursions.
THis is a very nice guide, covering pretty much everything a cruiser would like to know.

This guide is written in a much more conversation style than other guides books and therefore is more interesting and gives a better feel for the area being reviewed. The guide is not complete, but the information is good.
