I read Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking in 2009 and haven't smoked since. Not even craved a cigarette. So I was curious about his other books. I didn't try them right away, I suppose I was worried that if they didn't work then it would crush my idea that he really did develop a great system to stomp out our bad habits.So I downloaded this recently and decided to give it a try. It was very similar in nature to the EasyWay method: while you might not be startled by new amazing facts, Carr's method is different. It works by undoing the mental and emotional connections to the the habit and product, reversing the brainwashing that years of consumption, advertising and society did to our minds.Have I kicked sugar since reading it? I'd say by amount 80%. Do I miss it? Nope, hardly at all. I am not craving chocolate, cake, cookies, bread, potatoes. It's amazing really to change a 4-decade habit with a book.

Allen Carr is my luvvie to be honest. Three years ago he helped me quit smoking, and I've been forever grateful and never took another puff of tobacco. My loyalty to him is well-deserved:After I quit drinking, I had some scary sugar binges (I'm talking eating 9 loft-house style sugar cookies in under a half-hour here, people!!!!) so I realized I had a problem brewing pretty quick. Because I got a second job, lately I've had more income, so I felt I had the resources to eat a better diet. I scooped this book on Audible AND read along to the Kindle version. It's been three months and I have really enjoyed being ~almost~ sugarless - sometimes I'll partake in processed carbs if there is a special occasion, but if I'm flying solo I go the EasyWay!

In 2009 I quit smoking with the help of Allen Carr's book. I was joking then that all words "cigarettes" should be replaced with "chocolate" and I would be sugar free as well. Naturally, I just had to read the book Good Sugar Bad Sugar to see what happens. Guess what? It worked this time too! I do eat more fruit than before, but that's ok - 150 g of apple is far more better than 150 g of cookies.Don't be too nitpicky, though. There are holes and inconsistencies in the text. Leave them, and rather focus on the benefit that waits for you at the end of the book - sugar-free life!

Well, it certainly gets the message across. Might be a bit extreme as it heads toward nearly vegetarian diet. Based on more recent research, I think the book needs updating as a healthy diet contains protein, carbs and some fat. But it does make you think about bread, potatoes, rice, and most processed foods as poor dietary choices. So I think it is a good read if a little extreme.

If you're a fan of other writings of Jenny Boylan, you won't be disappointed. Her thriller Long Black Veil may be a fictional who dunnit, but the same lyrical, humorous and self-deprecating prose from her auto-biographical books exists here. Character depiction contains incredible depth and personal history. This mystery is loaded with the real ups and downs of college friendships, focusing primarily on Quentin/Judith, but also digging deeply into the psyches of each character. The only disappointing part of reading Long Black Veil is finishing it.

You'll begin to see little inconsistencies, and they will continue to crop up occasionally. But for the most part, it doesn't interfere with the main story. Decent light reading, especially since I didn't pay for the book, as I have a wonderful SO that picks this stuff out for me to read. It made for a decent beach read for the weekend down the shore. But what it does make me wonder, is if the folks at this publishing house bother to proof read their products before printing it.

This is a very complex story with very complex characters. Although a mystery novel, it is even more a story of several characters’ intertwined journeys on quests to discover their true selves. The resolution of the mystery is as messy as the interconnected journeys of self discovery, which lends an air of verisimilitude that a straight mystery would lack. By the time I reached the last 20% of the book I found it impossible to put down until the final page.

The story may be good, but the story telling isn't. The comparison to Donna Tartt in the blurb is far off the mark.

If you can say that about murder hidden for 30-something years. There are some really lovely lines in here about self acceptance. It isn’t much of a spoiler to say that’s probably what you’d expect from a novel with a transgendered main character.

A fantastic thriller novel. I absolutely could not put it down. A must read for sure!

Beautifully written and full of intrigue and surprises. A great summer read.

This is a wonderful story, wrapped in a mystery, of change and hope.

This book is fantastic for someone who is comfortable with basic crochet stitches but is still learning how to read crochet patterns. I've made the shopping tote already and now I'm working my way through the honeycomb blanket (the yellow one on the cover!) and I'm learning a lot. Between the pictures, pattern diagrams, and the written instructions I've had little trouble in making the patterns work for me.I bought this on kindle, which I'm so glad I did! I'm able to annotate the pattern as I go and if I take my project with me the patterns are alway with me. It's also handy if I'm at the yarn shop and I want to buy yarn for a project to tackle.I would highly recommend this book.

I've already started on several projects from this book, everything is well written and easy to understand, great pictures and diagrams, excellent book for a beginner

If you've ever envisioned scenes of your favorite cartoons or animes interacting, if you've once loved a movie so much that you've memorized entire passages of its dialogue, or been influenced by a rock song to the extent that you'd picked up a guitar to learn the chords... Ernie Cline revives these feelings. Ready Player One moves like a locomotive, and there are scenes in it that will absolutely explode your nerdy brain. Ready Player One was a New York Times Bestseller. It's soon to be a blockbuster motion picture what's directed by Steven Spielberg, and, self-deprecating guy that he is, good luck to him trying to tamp down on the book's references to his movies. I'm hyped for the movie. But the book came first, and the book will have an even more special place in my nerd heart. It's easily in my top five favorite reads ever. Ready Player One, yeah, an immersive, imaginative, childhood-mining, unputdownable read. Armada, not so much.

Reads like it was written by a high-school student. And to the people that think that's because it's POV: ALL of his writing is like that. Everything that the protagonist needs to happen, happens fine and everything works out because he is the chosen one of some rich nerd's world. It's the worst kind of wish fulfillment. I hate the term Mary-Sue but that's what this book is about.

I got this after seeing the movie and hearing from a few friends about how different the book is. My two main points after reading this book in 3 days:1. Love the 80's pop culture references integrated into the story. No book I've ever read has ever gone this deep into 80's game, movie, TV, music references. The writer is obviously a true 80's fanatic and geek. No doubt about that, this guy has lived it and did his homework.2. The main character is completely unlikable. He never arcs or changes, even at the end (finding 'love' is not a character change). Honestly, I've never read a book where the main character is just a complete and utter unlikeable character even to the end. You never really want this jerk to succeed. His inner workings and thoughts are as just about as bad as the main villain.Conclusion-Steven Spielberg did a brilliant job taking the meat of this story and actually making the primarily character LIKEABLE because the writer was just down right horrible at it. If the filmmakers had followed the book, no doubt it wouldn't have been successful. I did enjoy the 80's references, but too bad the main character was unlikable.

I can hardly understand the allure of this novel. Or how it managed to gain such popularity. Feels like its written for a fourteen year old, which is in such contrast to the age group who would either understand or have experienced anything that happens in this book... those of us in our late thirties, early forties. It read like a list of games and game explanations, with zero character development. I never finished... because I really didn't care about any of the characters in the book or what the outcome would be. I often found myself nodding off, chapter after chapter. It's a poor write... and a poorer read.

Tolkien wrote Lord of the Rings as a 'myth for the machine age.' I think RP1 is an imaginative fairy tale for the online-gamer / virtual reality age. And the picture isn't pretty. I'm not talking about the cliche'd 'environmental apocalypse' of the outside world that the gamers actually live in, but the way that VR *is* their reality, and, to the characters, and in a very truthful way, the only reality that matters.That disturbing aspect of Cline's novel is imaginatively and entertainingly written. The first third of the novel is a marvel. I'd give it ten stars. The second two-thirds, like The Martian in many ways, is a bit repetitive and predictable in a TV-series sort of way.The novel is worthy and well-written, and the fairy tale aspect is touching. You end up rooting for the heroes and heroine, and even get a small glimpse into the motivations and heart of the villain (though I think he could have been much better presented, a la J. K. Rowling's villains).All in all, a highly enjoyable book. The best take I've read on VR and online gaming. Plus it's lots of fun!

I was on the hunt to figure out what I could grow with my new hydroponic system. Glad I found this book! An easy read, I now have a beautiful sage, mint, strawberry and blueberry garden. I recommend this book to anyone in search of how to get started in gardening because this is easy and inexpensive!

This book has shown me the possibilities of growing my own plants even if I don't have that much space. This has introduced me to hydroponics, all about the essentials that I needed to know for my first hydroponic system. Also, this has instructions on how to construct different hydroponics systems, what kinds of plants to grow and a lot more. This has magnified my idea on the ease of doing hydroponics. Also, with the help of the illustrations in this book, reading becomes entertaining and learning is much more easier.

A nice book about hydroponics. Surprisingly I found out the one can use cheap substrates instead of expensive soil.I actually had no idea how to grow fruits, herbs, and veggies and this book gave me this knowledge. It was pretty easy to understand, and the illustrations were neat and helpful as well. You can find out lots of new things about planting, nutrient solutions, drip systems, and installation of the hydroponics system. Those tips will be most probably helpful both for the beginners and for those who already know a thing or two on the topic.

Only recently I came across this unique type of gardening. This book gave me really good overview what is hydroponics gardening, what plants I can grow using this system, how to actually build this system. I was amazed how I can have vegetables grown and not spend too much money .What is great about this system is that you can have your own vegetable. I enjoyed reading this informative book.

I learned something about the various types of hydroponic systems. I am primarily interested in growing specific greens such as endives, escaroles and other lettuces and herbs. I have a small three pod aero garden now and am waiting for the Ikea hydroponic system to become available in the United States. The main complaint of the book is the poor grammar. For a small, inexpensive book it is just adequate.

I was really surprised at how much there is to hydroponics. As an organic gardener I'm always looking for new sustainable ways of growing. This book is amazingly complete, everything from supply lists, to detailed 'how to's", to even a review of 5 apps to use while growing. It's obvious the author has passion and knowledge in the subject.

I'm a big fan of Jill's, I listen to her podcast all the time and she was one of my inspirations for changing careers to become a Financial Advisor. So I was really excited to get her book. It was a quick, relatively easy read, that made what can be a pretty dry subject entertaining. Her writing style reminds me of sitting down with that friend who is going to tell you the truth even if it isn't what you want to hear, and isn't going to let you get away with your B.S. We all need a friend like that! Her advice is sound, leaning towards conservative, and she gives lots of great real-world examples on why you should prepare for life's unexpected challenges. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I think it may have helped me embrace portfolio rebalancing.

Everyone has done dumb things with their money, some dumber than others. Here, the author addresses her list of common mistakes and included stories with the financial impact of those mistakes, making what could be a very dry book more interesting. A lot of this is common sense, but as we all know, common sense isn't always so common. This was a fairly quick read with some good reminders.Thank you to Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.

I always appreciate the no-nonsense, smart advice that Jill brings to personal finance. Almost everyone will find something here that will help them make smarter decisions about money. Especially appreciated is Jill's practical approach to spending on higher education. Plus, a great does of humor and storytelling makes this a useful and delightful read.

That's my plan at least. This book is super easy to read and draws a lot of parallels to Suze Orman's 9 Steps to Financial Freedom in terms of the key lessons. The main difference is that Jill uses more anecdotes to show how it can all go wrong and offers tips for how to make sure you don't make these dumb mistakes.

Initially I didn’t know for whom this book was written. The answer is EVERYONE. From the person who doesn’t have money to “invest” to the high net worth individual who has a sophisticated money manager, Schlesinger’s book is for all. She not only tells you what you’re doing wrong and how to fix it, she tells you WHY. You won’t change your behavior if you don’t change your thinking --Schlesinger guides you through the process of understanding your financial psychology. It’s an incredibly valuable book that has universal application.The best part though is that Schlesinger is hilarious. And oh so honest.

I read The Dumb Things Smart People Do With Their Money: Thirteen Ways to Right Your Financial Wrongs and completely enjoyed the book. For someone like me, nearing retirement it is a valuable resource if only to serve as a check on the decisions my wife and I have made so far. There is a wealth of great advice delivered in an easy and fun to read style. Some of the mistakes we’ve already made can’t be undone but many of our choices can still be modified to greater advantage. I highly recommend this useful financial guide.

Jill delivers great advice in a great read! I am making this a mandatory book to read for my son. It isn't dumb to make financial mistakes but it is dumb not to be aware of what they are. Thanks for clearing up so many areas I've struggled with for years.

This book is an easy read and is filled with excellent advice and real life examples.
