I like this reference material. I was looking for a thesaurus, but I got this, because the back cover said that it was "more in depth" than a thesaurus. There are not many words; mostly very common words. It is very helpful for those, though. I would say that if you are a serious college student, get the MW Collegiate Thesaurus. If you are a high school student, get the MW Thesaurus. If you are an elementary/middle school student, get this. - 4 Stars - Few Words - Serves its Purpose - Please Rate as Helpful -

Oe of the best handbooks any writer and lover of language could own. When I taught high school Language Arts, I highly recommended it to my college-bound students. A number of them listened, bought it, took it to school with them, and later reported it one of the most useful tools they had along with Strunk/White's Elements of Style. If words like elude and evade seemed alike, this book would solve the puzzle. Connotation and denotation of similar words are carefully and fully defined. Utterly fascinating just to read through.

When learning to become a proficient writer, one has to know how to not become repetitive with the same words. At least​, this is what my daughter tells me. These books were bought for her to assist her in her writing skills. I have not heard any complaint so they must be helping her with her writing.

The back cover describes this book perfectly. It is "practical, in-depth advice on using the right word in the right place". The explanations are clear, precise and presented in a way that makes the writer look more accomplished than he or she may be.

This has been great for explaining the proper way to use books like this for my seven-year-old daughter but is missing a lot of words that I would think should be inside.

Great dictionary for children. Large print is nice as they learn how to find words and expand their vocabulary.

Overall, I am happy and the price was good for the product. However, there are about 30 pages in the middle that are significantly bent and crinkled. Looks as though someone played a very sloppy game of football with the book before it was shipped. The book is usable, but it's in disappointing shape.

Very good reference book but the yucky paper it's made of makes my hands recoil. I ordered the library binding because somehow I though the whole thing would be a tad better quality. Not so, this is regular mass paperback quality inside of a nice cover. Sad waste, I won't be keeping for my personal library.

This large volume is rife with distinct voices, multicultural characters, and engaging scenes. The monologues are not just a string of questions, but the unseen character the soloist is speaking to is clearly defined within the monologue making them useful for character study and acting in general. The characters throughout the volume are age appropriate and the plots presented would be of interest to middle school and younger high school students.The volume is organized well with short monologues divided by gender in the first half of the book and scenes with incrementally increasing number of characters in the second half of the book. The book is useful for classroom use (beginning through advanced classes), character work, ensemble work, and practice for students blocking and directing scenes.Monologues range from the historical (immigrants coming to America, pg 74) to current issues (global warming, pg 78) but are always seen from the young person's point of view. The multicultural voices included in the collection are realistically written with appropriate diction and rhythm to their speech. Occasionally, indigenous words (xie xie, pg 10) are scattered throughout monologues, but the correct pronunciation as well as the word's meaning are always included so as not to confuse the student. The topics are relevant and even come from literature the students may be studying (To Kill a Mockingbird is mentioned in one monologue).Some of the scenes in the second half of the book are adapted from longer plays (pg 82 "Over the Rainbow") and so have well developed characters. Surface also includes magical characters (a spirit cat, a cricket) as well as inanimate objects to give students a chance at playing non-traditional characters. Dialogue in the book is engaging and differs from piece to piece so students can work on pace and tone when speaking.This is an excellent book and would be useful in a variety of classrooms including speech/communication, drama, English or social studies.

For example, you are standing on a street corner curb while it is raining and you suddenly jump back and a taxi drives by nearly splashing you. You made no conscious decision based on recognizing the taxi, processing the information and then deciding to jump. Your amygdala recognized the danger, knew what had to be done and ordered the muscles to do it. The amygdala then makes the prefrontal cortex aware of what has happened. Then you think, plan a course of action, “I’d better not stand so close to the curb when it is raining.” As well as causing the body to go into a fear mode from external events, the amygdala can be affected by stored memories. If one has had a bad experience with a bear, discussing the event can trigger the amygdala to produce the same stress hormones and reactions as if the bear was in the room. Memories can therefore trigger panic attacks. The book also points out how the amygdala signals the other organs of the body and causes them to release hormones to activate other organs of your body. For example, you are about to give a presentation at a large business function and as you walk to the rostrum your pulse rate goes up, you are sweating a bit and feel your muscles tightening. These reactions are the amygdala going into action expressing the emotion fear. The author points out that it takes a determined effort by a person to change the functioning of the amygdala by conscious effort in confronting the fears. If one is fearful of giving public speeches, practice and give more public speeches. He wisely points out that backing down to a fear only makes the situation worse because the neural pathways are created that backdown is the proper response and it is easier to back down the next time, but the fear only grows worse not better. In addition, the fear produces to other emotions: grief and anger. The person is now angry at himself for not being able to give the speech as others do and is in grief for not being able to do what others do easily.My only criticism of the book is that it seems to only recognize two primary emotions: fear and anxiety. But anxiety is really fear combined with anticipation. His book does not recognize the work done by Robert Plutchek Emotion: A Psychoevolutionary Synthesis In this book the author states there are eight primary emotions, which come in pairs fear-anger, joy-grief, anticipation-surprise and disgust-acceptance. The amygdala is also responsible for the feelings of happiness and good cheer we feel at weddings, parties and other cheerful occasions. This book could have been more complete in describing the emotions if these had been included. Dr. Arden clearly shows how the emotion of fear can destroy a person’s happiness. Fear leads to anger and depression that in turn get worse as the amygdala increases the neural pathways. A person can end up living a “terrified” life and the terror gets worse and worse. But he also shows clearly that brain can be rewired, and how to do it, for individuals to attain a higher level of peace and happiness, in short, the emotion of Joy. Definitely should be read by anyone seriously interested in changing themselves or understanding those around them who are debilitated by fear and anxiety.

"Rewire your brain" by Dr. Arden is a very worthwhile book to read and through this review, I hope to quickly explain the basis of the book while encouraging you to read it. First I will give a short overview of the whole book and then I will go into a detailed review of my favorite sections, finally finishing with some tips that I believe will make this read even more rewarding.I chose this book to read for my intro to neuroscience course expecting a technical book, although labeled "accessible" on the back cover review, written from a professional to other professionals. I was pleasantly surprised that this book was, in fact, accessible and was able to give me a lot of insight on how interconnected and changeable the brain is as well as practical ways I could apply this changeability to better my life. In all honesty, when I ordered this book, I only briefly scanned the description to make sure it had neuroscience concepts so that I could read it for my class. It wasn't until I received the book that I realized that it was a self-help book. Now after reading it, I would recommend this book to everyone, not only to those looking for help due to a difficult mental issue they are encountering. I am a biology and psychology undergraduate senior and have spent the past 5 years immersed in classes about neurons, psychological disorders, physiology, etc. but I was able to learn so much from this book. For example, I have heard all throughout my life that eating right and exercising are good for your brain, but I was never told a simple how. This book does this beautifully in my favorite section of the book. The style of the book was straight forward and simple. There were no long or complicated words outside of the neurological terms necessary. The author would begin each section with a story of a patient he had worked with and then continued with how each topic affects the brain and how use this knowledge to our advantage. There were 9 chapters in this book covering basic neuroplasticity, anxiety, depression, memory, healthy eating, exercise and sleep, the benefits of social interactions, resiliency, and attention. I will go into more detail on a few of my favorite chapters below.CH 1: Firing the right cells togetherThis section is essentially the meat of the whole book. Here the author introduces the concept of a changeable brain and what this means to us. He describes how the different parts of the brain function, how neurons work, and how neuroplasticity occurs. Due to the content of this section, you may think that this part of the book would be more of a textbook type read, however that is not the case whatsoever. Dr. Arden manages to keep this section simple and interesting. He even throws in some fun facts that I really enjoyed about how a woman's brain and a man's brain differ. Here is one example: "Since woman's brains have a better connection between the two hemispheres ... words often carry more emotional meaning for women than they do for men." I definitely see this amongst the couples that I know. The most important part of this chapter is where the author introduces his method of how to rewire the brain. He uses a method he calls FEED, in which you focus, take effort to change, reach effortlessness, and finally are determined to stay in practice. This is explained very well and is followed up with a short example that allows you to relate this method to everyday life.CH 2: Taming your AmygdalaThe chapter is the anxiety section, a section that I think everyone can relate to very well since I'm sure everyone has experienced some type of anxiety at some point in their life. Dr. Arden draws you into this section by beginning with a story about a patient of his with public speaking anxiety. This was a perfect way to begin this chapter because not having any fear associated with public speaking is, I'm sure, a very small minority. That there is a way to stop this fear is very exciting because public speaking is something that has to be done all throughout life, from school to the workplace. The author then goes on to explain how anxiety negatively affects the brain and also how to moderate this anxiety. As it turns out, a common theme in rewriting the brain is to do the thing you don't want to in a method of "challenging the paradox": "Challenging the paradox involves doing away with avoidance and replacing it with exposure". In his theory, the more you expose yourself, the less anxiety you will experience.CH 5 Fueling your brain and CH 6 Exercise and SleepIf you have no interest in any other parts of this book, I would recommend getting this book just for these 2 chapters. These were by far my favorite chapters of this book. As I talked about before, you always hear how eating right, exercising, and getting enough sleep is good for your body. But Dr. Arden goes one step further and actually explains why this is, down to the chemicals and parts of the brain involved. I won't go into any detail since I don't want to ruin the fun of reading these chapters, but trust me, they are fascinating.Although this book was mostly easy to read, there were parts of the book that I found myself quickly scanning over because of the use of technical language, particularly in regards to the different parts of the brain. In some sections, the author would introduce many parts of the brain at once and this barrage of abbreviations could get overwhelming. While reading, I kept thinking that I wished I had made a quick list of different parts of the brain so that I could easily refer to it. A tip I would give to make this book even more rewarding would be to keep a sheet of paper or an index card near you when reading, even during the first chapter. Each time a part of the brain is introduced, jot it down with its basic function, what side of the brain its in, what topic it influences, and what changes it. Then if this part is talked about again, add the new information to the list. This way you have a sort of cheat sheet for quick reference while you read the book and even after.By combining readability, relatable passages, and fascinating content, Dr. Arden creates a book that I believe everyone would benefit by reading. In fact, I am planning on re-reading this book while taking my own advice of making a so called cheat sheet so that I can get everything I can out of this book. So to end, I just wanted to say that even while I wrote this review, I used Dr. Arden's method of FEED. As he tells you in the attention section, it is important to focus when you are trying to attend to something. I took to heart this advice and tried my best to focus by turning off my TV and closing my internet browsing windows, and of course was able to write this review faster and in a more organized way than if I hadn't.

This book is a great source for symmetric methods in differential equations. But please buy the hard-copy edition, the digitial edition (Kindle) does not increase the math font size when you change the text font size. In my Kindle for Mac, I was not able to zoom the equations as well. In sum, it is a pain to read the digital edition because the math font is smaller and also a little bit faint. I was hopping to save money by purchasing the digital version but in the end I had to apply for a refund for my digital purchase and I got the hard-copy version.

This is an excellent book, wow, sublime, wonderful, along with peter Hydon, this pair of books are superb, Gilmore is rubbish, Ibragimov and Hydon, are masters in the art of symmetry

First of all, thank you to Netgalley and Orca Book Publishers for giving me a free copy of this book in exchange for a review!Big Water follows the story of two lone survivors who find themselves adrift after a shipwreck. It's based on historical truth, and I really liked the glimpse into a vibrant story I hadn't heard about before.Our narrator, Christina, told the story with great detail and feeling. I thought the author did a good job of tackling such an unbearable tragedy and showing it honestly through the eyes of a teen. We find out in the course of the book that Christina is trying to understand the death of her twin brother, Jonathan. I thought that it as an interesting choice to frame the shipwreck through the lens of her brother's death. This had the benefit of taking the present part of the story (which could easily have become incomprehensibly grim) and distilling it into a grief that's more readily accessible.However, I also found the amount of flashbacks to be distracting, and ultimately a bit stale. I think it might be because--though this particular story is definitely unique--the story of the perfect brother who died and the grieving parents isn't, particularly. I didn't really feel an emotional connection to Jonathan or Christina's life she left behind, because most of the characters in it felt fairly standard. I think this narrative device could have worked harder.Similarly, there were two hooks--Why is Christina so guilty? and What is Daniel's secret?--that didn't really pan out satisfyingly. Christina's guilt is understandable but the reason isn't necessarily a revelation. Daniel's secret is interesting, but once it's out it's repeated several times, with nothing really coming out of it in the end--at least not at the point the story stops. Again, I felt these were two missed opportunities to propel the story deeper.That said, I did read through in a rush, and enjoyed learning about this historical event. Overall, a really interesting story!Also that cover is GORG

I really enjoy Historical Fiction, so I was sure this book would capture my attention. It was pretty surprising when I ended up disliking it and skimming the last few chapters.For me the biggest problem was the writing style. It never engaged me and it felt like it was more of a book report than fiction. When intense storms or things were happening I felt more confused than anything else, because it never felt intense. I never felt like the characters were in much danger. Christina and Daniel also never felt like real characters because of this, and so I wasn't able to connect with them. I apologize for this short review, but there really isn't much else to say about this book. I saw some other reviews say that this book lacked depth, and I feel that that is a very accurate summary of why I didn't enjoy it. In the end I gave it one star on Goodreads.Â

Big Water is a fictional account of the real-life story of the only two survivors of the sinking of the SS Asia in 1882. This is a really good story. It tells of a young 17 year old named Christina McBurney who is so upset at her twin brother's death of consumption, runs away and boards The Asia, to go somewhere new. Luckily her cousin works on the Asia so she knows someone.The sea is so turbulent that she is lucky to get on the last boat with her cousin, the Captain and a few other people and a young man named Daniel.What follows is a harrowing journey of being lost at sea and watching everyone die in the lifeboat except for Daniel and herself.What follows is their journey and where it leads them to. Along this journey Christina learns that what she thought was true may not be and she grows up a lot. I loved this story and I am sure a lot of people will like it as well. I gave this book 5 Stars

When Christina's twin brother dies, she runs away and boards the steamship Asia. While on the Great Lakes, a storm topples the boat, leaving Christina scrambling in the water. With a dozen others, Christina finds shelter on a lifeboat, only to have it turn over and over in the water. By the end of the night, only Christina and one other are alive.Based on a true story, this was an interesting look at a little known disaster. Christina was a strong and dynamic character, one I found myself rooting for. I think the writing style is well suited towards young adults, particularly those who want a little adventure and romance. Highly recommended.
