I read this comic after finishing the series produced by Netflix and I got to say, after the show, this comic seems lacking in the complex narrative of James and Alyssa's heads and their struggling morality. If you are interested in the show, I suggest that you read this comic first as an introduction to the characters and the story, then watch the show as both of the characters develop better than their comic counterparts. It was a good graphic novel and I enjoyed seeing the differences and similarities between the two media as I read. But I still think that it could use some fine tuning as it seemed rushed and forced at times with their actions, while the plot just kinda happened, where as the show grasped the qualities of the comic with full force and displayed a well spoken narrative with fantastic characters and motives, and a plot that had reason to begin with, forcing the characters to act in such a way, not for others, but for their own benefits. I still recommend that you read this as it is a good viewing experience with simple yet delightful comics and a story that differentiates from the common tropes of the boy meets girl genre. Don't get me wrong, it was good and I liked it, but the show did it better

Purchased after watching the Netflix show. Was disappointed. Usually the book is better but this graphic novel was void of character development and the graphics we're just meh. The show is phenomenal and really puts meat on the bones of the book.

This is a quick read about the somewhat disturbing exploits of a young sociopath and his girlfriend. I found the art and writing to be simple but quite good. Probably the most noteworthy part for me was that I thought about it after I breezed through enough to go back and read it again - something I seldom do. In fact I may read it one more time soon. It seems to be one of those comix that reads differently each time I pick it up. I'd almost say there is something poetic revealed in the combination of art and story. It's definitely one of my favorite comics this year and I read a lot of graphic novels. I do think the price could be a touch lower. This seems like a $10 book at most considering its fairly short and totally in black and white. Still, there's a lot of mediocrity out there and "the end of the f$?!@ing world" definitely rises out of the pack to be something different.

Short, to the point.Book lasts maybe 15 minutes at the longest but it has a strong plot and good characters.Read it due to the Netflix/Channel 4 show, and they kept it quite the same, except for some bits that I'm sure they'll work on later.

If you thought the Netflix show was dark...Take a stiff drink before reading this. This is dark, angry, scary reading.

The book was great! Definitely different from the series and I really enjoyed seeing the contrast between the two.

I watched the series on Netflix first. So the book wasn't quite what I expected, more like a graphic novel, but still definitely enjoyed this.

Genuine, honest, pure -- these are the words that come to mind after reading 'TEOTFW'. This graphic novel oozes humanity from its simple, straight-forward plot. At least, you'll THINK it's simple until you actually consider the narrative on a much deeper level. What is 'TEOTFW' trying to say? At first, it may appear to just be a modern twist on the tale of the star-crossed lovers Bonnie & Clyde. Yet, what we have here is something more sentimental... more altruistic. This story is a journey for two broken souls -- teenage runaways whom have no home, no loving family, no real connection to anything but each other. They're each on a path towards understanding what love is. Yet, they get there via two very different methods. One realizes that there actually is someone in this world that she can love wholeheartedly and trust. The other doesn't feel love, or anything else for that matter... right up until a crucial moment when he realizes that he actually knew love from the start. Along the way, the two young lovers encounter all sorts of horrible, weak and predatory people. Their encounters test what they know about each other and themselves. In the end, not only will you reconsider your own understanding of love, but also how far you would go FOR the one you love.I'll be perfectly honest - before reading 'TEOTFW', I had not heard of creator Charles Forsman. That being said, I'm greatly impressed with his work and will continue to follow his output in the future. Forsman crafted this story with integrity. He has earned my utmost respect for doing so.

About the Author

G. M. Barnes was the chief of the Research and Engineering Office of Ordnance from 1938 until 1951. He was intimately involved in the ENIAC project at the University of Pennsylvania, helping to usher in a new age technology. He died in 1961 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

A few tables/charts with a wealth of information have tiny text but most of this was easy enough to read.This is a classic post-war treatise on the weapons used for ground warfare during World War II by the U.S. Army and as such the Marines. It was first published around 1947 when the war was fresh and doubtlessly numerous technical details were still classified. It was written by a man intimately involved in many design projects. The coverage pretty much explains the breadth. But also some of the public relations slant of esoteric details, picked on later.(One thing I missed when I first wrote this rambling, a bit over the top review back in September 2015 was that the 57mm M1 antitank gun is not mentioned even though it was a key component of Infantry weaponry in 1944, sometimes maligned but often quiet effective when carefully used as noted in many, many detailed accounts. Perhaps because it was s revision of the British 6 pounder and not designed by Barnes men? Or the Ordnance Department did such a bad job supplying any ammunition but plain armor peorcing?)Examples of use are included for some weapons and detailed tables of data for many. He explains references to the "long primer" for the 76-mm gun and the 81-mm mortar T1 extension tube. I am happy to have bought it for that and numerous other details.Most of it is positive and ignores failures, posed from the viewpoint of a proud designer not an actual user. The failure to realize the need for a bigger caliber bazooka to supplement the 2.36-inch against heavier German armor only by the time the war was over, and the inability to develop hollow-charge (HEAT) ammo for cannon and howitzers to reach its minimum potential (twice the caliber in penetration or better). He refers to the M3 and M5 light tank as "excellent" when the tanker's epithet would have been "tin plated coffin with a pea-shooter" - they were butchered in Africa when fighting German tanks and then reverted to safer roles - recon and infantry support. The failure to develop a better light tank in time is not mentioned even though the T7 light tank with a 57-mm gun was ready in mid-1942 and could have been in the field around 1943 (there is an excuse that blinds fools to the reality). The design of the M24 began in 1943, not 1945. The 76-mm gun could hardly penetrate the "...heaviest German tank armor." which is why the Army stopped buying the 76-mm armed M18 Gun Motor Carriage. The 90-mm gun was not optimized for anti-tank use and hence had the same issues with dealing with the frontal armor of the Panther (though it could handle the Tiger.) The tendency to adapt anti-aircraft guns for anti-tank guns and not optimize them for anti-armor was asinine. “Thankfully” the Soviets did it too! The 3-inch gun and 76-mm were okay in 1942 and 1943 but a burden to users in 1944 and they started demanding a much better weapon and ammunition. Which was only provided slowly. Why was it that the “good stuff” like the M26 only appeared late - by the time the war ended? And yet digging back you will find much of it was ready much earlier? Why were the M10, M18, and M36 designed as ”Gun Motor Carriages” and not tanks and why did the Ordnance Department help keep them and tanks separate by choosing what they could and could not do for the ammunition for both? Let alone the choice of guns used on each....Thus - there is a lot of information and many details many people will never have heard before. But there are also many missing details concerning what the Ordnance Department failed to do and yet could have done (hint: a low-spin sabot and finned projectiles were mentioned in a report in 1942 that could have led to the U.S. cannon and dinky little 75-mm howitzers having a high-penetration HEAT round...). Dig into that deeper and you might find it nauseating the way people played games that hindered the U.S. Army in its job of helping beat the Germans. And sometimes couldn't put 2 and 2 together to get the right answer.If you want a politics free book you will not get it in this once, not unless you shut your eyes and remain ignorant: with its omissions and blatant attempts to spin everything as “fabulous” it is quiet a political book.

About the Author

Malala Yousafzai is a cofounder and board member of Malala Fund. Malala began her campaign for education at age eleven, when she anonymously blogged for BBC Urdu about life under the Taliban in Pakistan's Swat Valley. My wish is that this book is read by people who can't see that there is a human being behind each displaced person. That there is a story behind every life. That we all want the same thing, a life worth living.

We Are Displaced tells the story of Malala and her family becoming internally displaced and then living in England after she was shot as well as the stories of several other women and girls who have been displaced as well. The stories are told in their own words with their own emotions. Some are still living in refugee camps, some are working hard to make a new life in a new country. One didn’t even learn why her parents fled when she was young and one “adopted” a refugee family when they arrived in America. These are all important stories to know. As I read the book, I found myself reading bits and pieces to anyone who would listen. I very highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

My 8 yr-old daughter and I learned a lot from listening to these inspiring survival stories from women from around the globe. It is hard to imagine loosing everything including loved ones. How these girls managed to overcome their losses and ordeals are life lessons that no one should ever experience. Very relevant in the unstable world we currently live in to raise awareness on the lives of the refugees we might have around us and on our own vulnerabilities.

What a marvelous and heartbreaking story about displaced families and refugees all over the world. We need to take note about not only the hatred they experienced in their own countries, but also the racism and hatred they continue to experience in their new lands.

The best book that I have ever read

THIS IS a very informative book. This young woman has endured so much. The story of her life evokes emotion of empathy and gratitude to live in a country, although not perfect, but where girls may attend school. This is a must read for any one who wants to know what it is like to be a young refugee. So many of us take our freedoms for granted and have no idea why families flee the countries of their birth.

The stories Malala shares are tragic and amazing at the same time. I highly recommend this book.

Brutally honest and a must read! Malala and others tell the truth about being displaced and being refugees. Heart breaking and inspiring!

My favorite psychological thrillers are ones that leave me on the edge of my seat, but also have a "somewhat" happy ending (one that I'm satisfied with, anyway.) This book did not disappoint. I read it in 2 days and only because I forced myself to give my family some attention. So well written and will keep you hooked. I liked that there were no hidden characters, as there so often are in thrillers, and you can somewhat figure out the mystery on your own, but then are still duped in the end. Brilliant.

Let me say first off, that the book is well written, well crafted, and just plain good. I bumped up against the ads for it on The New Yorker website, then on Amazon, and as always, am looking for a good, well written suspense/thriller/mystery type read. ( I don't think there are enough of them being spun out!) The hook had me, What The **** Happened to Ellie? The writing lures you in.......the whole family saga thing, dysfunction, loss, grief, etc. What I really want to say is, like my headline, caution. This is a very, very disturbing book. The central characters emerge slowly and if you are like me, I'm reading along wanting to find out wtf happened to Ellie? And unlike many readers, I don't try to figger out what happened, who dunnit...... what you find out about Ellie and the other characters in the book is scary stuff. So, what I'm saying is, if you are a sensitive soul who is is averse to childhood abuse/torture and highly damaged manipulative people, I'd suggest not reading this.I gave it 5 stars for the craft of writing, it is well written, and the writing supports the the plot and story, in spite of what i've said re: caveat emptor.

This book was incredibly suspenseful and well written. In that respect I would have rated it higher. The subject matter, though, was so distressing to me personally that I cannot recommend reading it. The concluding chapters and ending were both not believable and unacceptable. In sum, while this book possessed the ingredients for greatness, the storyline unfolded in such a horrific manner that it washed away the good.

My first Lisa Jewell novel. I read reviews about everybody "figuring it out", but the pieces are given to the reader intentionally, doling out bits to keep the story flowing... and the questions rolling. Great plot flow btw. I enjoyed the entire thing. You have villains, victims, heroes, and sometimes a bizarre mix of all 3 in the same characters. Truly fascinating.

"Then She Was Gone" is a novel about a fifteen year old girl named Ellie Mack who disappears in 2005.Much of the book takes place in 2015, and is told from the point of view of Laurel Mack, the missing girl's mother. Ellie was Laurel's youngest daughter. Ellie's remains have finally been found, so maybe the family can now have some closure. Not that the family unit is still intact. Laurel was so filled with grief over the last ten years that she had nothing left of herself for her husband or her other children. Now Laurel is divorced, and is estranged from her older daughter and son.The book alternates between 2015, back to 2005, when the story is told from Ellie's point of view. The reader learns what happened to this fifteen year girl. And, eventually, Laurel learns the truth also.This is the third book I've read by Lisa Jewell, and I'm giving it five stars like I did the other two. But, unlike the other two, I'm not recommending it for everybody. Something awful happens in this book. Those who don't like reading disturbing things should move on to something else. Not that it's all that graphic. It's just so heartbreaking and hard to get out of your head.Why do I like this author so much? Because, once I start one of her books, it's hard to put down. Sometimes books, even good books, feel a bit like "homework" to me. But not Lisa Jewell's books. She makes me want to know more about the characters and about what I will discover next. There's a lot of nuance in her characters. Also, I think the fact that Lisa Jewell is British is part of the charm. I love the settings, the strange brand names, the unfamiliar expressions, and words not commonly used in the U.S. I love the amount of detail, not too much and not too little. Lisa Jewell's writing style reminds me a little of Liane Moriorty, although this particular book has some of the darkness of Gillian Flynn and is as disturbing as a Karin Slaughter book.

I liked this book. I didn’t love it and I figured out where the story was heading halfway through. I don’t think this book is advertised as having a big twist, so it didn’t bother me too much that I knew where the story was headed. I probably would have given three stars if it weren’t for the epilogue. Those last few pages really tied the story together and tugged at my heart.I was surprised I felt sympathy for the main antagonists, one definitely more than the other. The author really showed the human side of her villains and while I did not agree with their actions, I could see the method behind their madness.I would recommend this book to readers looking for a solid story with no major plot twists but well thought out, human characters.

It's hard to say what had me flipping the pages. The book certainly isn't a thriller, as some reviews say, but it was suspenseful, in a 'have to figure out what happened' sort of way. The most compelling part for me was the way the story was told. The structure definitely added to the suspense. I'd certainly read another book by this author.

I just couldn't put this novel down and finished it in less than 24 hours. To any of the commenters who describe it as predictable, I would counter that nothing seemed intentionally hidden here... I think the author meant for the reader to begin to put the pieces together at various stages. I found it to be a simply fascinating fast-moving story told via multiple view points, which unfold the story in excruciating character honesty, interspersed with some wonderfully lyrical prose. Loved it!

I'm a little bummed out on this book. I thought to myself when I first saw it listed - "Hey, finally here's a book that goes over the Beaglebone Black." (There aren't many books sad to say). I look in the sample, and see that the author chose Ubuntu over the Angstrom distro (which I cant stand), so I think cool. After working through the getting python up and running, I see the author go over Vision and Audio - over USB, and I go uh-oh. I scan through the rest of the book, and see nothing but USB sensors and devices.NOT ONE FREAKING BLURB ON USING ALL THAT GPIO HARDWARE ON THE BBB.The main excuse is - not wanting the user to damage his board. Duh. Why would I buy this board if I didn't want the hardware? I could have bought another RPi if I wanted that. There a lot easier to set up and use than the BBB.For all I know, the GPIO isn't even functional on the BBB with Ubuntu. Didn't see one iota of proof of it.Another complaint is the level of detail. An author of a book like this shouldn't gloss over detail on getting specific functionality - that is why you bought the book in the first place. With this book, your going to do a lot of googling to get the specifics. Not crazy about that.Other than those grouching points - I would still buy this book, since there are just so few - I just wish the title had been "Beaglebone Black USB Robotic Projects". That would have nailed it on the head, and I would have been aware of what I was getting.I was pretty much snookered on this one.Now you won't be :)

For people who learn by doing,this book will definitely hit the mark. The subject matter is presented through incremental builds of robotics projects, and delivers good value with lots of interesting and stimulating projects. I am definitely happy to own it, and the material gave me at least one or two missions after my current build.Having said that, this book misses out on the deeper elements of the beaglebone. The projects are heavy on integrating usb peripherals, and definitely target more rudimentary features of the beaglebone. I would have liked to see a little more around the GPIO pins, memory mapping to improve performance, and general expansion on the more technical aspects of the beaglebone.This book has plenty of positives going for it though, and I think it is a solid addition to the bookshelf. It was worth the money to me, and I would purchase it again in hindsight. I am still waiting for the brilliant technical reference to the beaglebone, but this book did a very nice job of walking readers through the possibilities of really neat experiments including vision, speech recognition, and autonomous behaviors. Would have gotten the 5th star if it took a dive into more geeky elements of the board.

"This book is designed for the informed beginner." is a quote from the author. I think it pretty accurately describes where I am with the Beaglebone Black. Actually, it is not too far from where I am with Linux as well.The book title suggests that it is for those who have an interest in robotics. I didn't have any interest in robotics when I started, but I do now. I just ordered a Sparkfun 2 wheeled robot platform and a couple of Pololu motor controllers with the intend of building a few of the projects that i didn't have the parts for.The Beaglebone Black can be frustrating - an Arduino clone it is not. But, it is a complete Linux 1Ghz computer with a lot of I/O. The default Angstrom distribution is not as close to being as stable as the Debian Wheezy distruibution supplied with the Raspberry Pi. (As of the time of this review the BBB is likely to get a default Debian distribution very soon.) Mr. Grimmett overcomes this by having you load an Ubuntu distribution on a sd card and boot from it instead. I used a 16GB card and have room to spare after reading the instructions on how to reclaim the unused space on page 89.I liked this book. It was almost a perfect fit for me. I knew the BBB could do lots of things but never really had any luck with some of the online tutorials that I tried. Because of the book I got my USB camera to work, showing video via OpenCV. With one of those cheapie USB sound cards and a Logitech headset I was able to record and play sounds via the ALSA library. I even tried a little speech recognition. This book is very good at showcasing the BBB's built in capabilities and actually getting them to work. If you are really interested, Mr. Grimmett will also show you how you can operate your Beaglebone Black by land, by air or by sea(above and beneath).The book covers programming with Python but is by no means a tutorial on the subject. That statement is pretty much true for robotics as well. Most of the robotics are made of simple to use USB type controllers for motors and servos and other sensors. Simple to use doesn't mean cheap! There is no doubt other ways of skinning this cat but I believe the author would have caused himself no end of grief by trying to describe a cheaper, more "solder it yourself" type of construction. To be honest, I had no idea you could build a robot by plugging in a bunch of controllers into a powered USB hub.So, should you buy this book? Well, if you're an "informed beginner", by all means. I found it a lot of fun - not only getting my Beaglebone Black to do something but giving me more much needed confidence with Linux. I am also looking forward to the day my robot parts arrive. There is a lot to get from this book.

Most robotics books stop at the point of hooking up sensors and servos on a wheeled platform, and demonstrate obstacle avoidance. With power of the BeagleBone Black available, this book starts with teaching your platform to speak, hear, and see, then become mobile. Then we explore multiple types of platforms including aerial and waterborne. What fun! Very nicely done.

Truly a gem for anyone interested in robotics projects using BeagleBone. This book has saved me uncountable hours of research into common challenges for robotics projects using this SBC. I highly recommend it.

Good book but a little extra coding on GPIO would have been great
