This book was recommended to me by a respected friend. I'm currently going through lay care counseling training at my church and was told this is a good resource. It is however you need to read it critically. Most of Sullivan's precepts are sound, except that I'm not sure I share his perspectives on listening to everyone you come into contact with. I think a good listener should be able to suggest alternative ways of looking at problems and issues effecting the person you're listening to. Many times the priorities, outlook and view of their problems or the causes of them are someone else's fault.

I have read many books on listening, and there are some that are more detailed such as "Are You really Listening?", yet I find myself returning time and time again to this book and keeping extra copies on hand to hand out time and time again. Why? It is a simple book anyone can understand-stand, mostly wrote in the first person so people really can see what it means to listen empathetically and not listen through their own filters. How do you make someone feel when you steam roll over them when they are trying to convey a deep feeling or ewmotion that they've pent up? This book will give you a great idea, and tell you from the perspective of a hurt person, how you can listen better. Written by a priest who deals with hurt people everyday and wanted to convey how much a person can heal just by understanding their feelings. This is the heart of the book, it is not about "Follow these 10 steps to become a great listener", it is about getting away from your own selfish need to be listened to, in order to help others. If you listen to them, it is far more likely, in the future, when you need it someone will listen to you. Even if you are a skilled listener, this book is a poignant reminder as to why you do what you do, and if you feel you can listen better, this book with show you why it is such a vital tool in communication, all communication should start and end with listening. I just finished reading this little book and found it quite convicting. I've always considered myself a "good listener," but found myself wondering as I read this whether I am just a good listener to those I like and consider worth listening to. Hmmm.... They are the easy ones to listen to! : )I realized I'm not so good at the harder-to-listen-to ones and need to work on that with some focus.Fr. Sullivan uses an interesting first-person form of writing that is quite excellent at helping the reader really feel the impact of various listening styles, etc. Quite effective and quite easy to read!

This is a must read book for anyone in ministry, in fact, it is a must-read book for anyone who are in relationships with others -- that means everyone. It points out how our poor listening hurts others, often unintentionally. It also gives some suggestions how we can improve our listening and how we can share so the other will understand us better. It is short and easy to read but oh so powerful.

Excellent read for people who want to work on their listening skills. Recommended for anyone involved in work where you counsel or coach others or anyone who wants to connect more deeply to others by listening. Following principles presented here you can become a better listener to your spouse, your kids, your friends, your teammates, your colleagues, and even to people you don't know well.

This author obviously loves the people he wants to minister to. His language is respectful and kind instead of admonishing. He makes you want to be the best listener possible because he paints lovely pictures of the good you can do with sincere and patient listening.

I ordered this book because I read the first 3 pages of the book at my friends house and knew that I had to read it and share it with my daughter and granddaughter.I recommend this book to everyone who values their relationships, especially children and grandchildren.It clearly explains what we have "all" done wrong in our listening skills, even when it is not intentional.

This book is well-written, and I again enjoyed the overall story. I say “again,” however, because this book is very similar to its predecessor, “Life As We Knew It.” I knew nothing about “The Dead & The Gone” other than that it is the second book in the “Last Survivors” series. When I began reading, I was surprised to discover that this book didn’t pick up where “Life As We Knew It” left off, but instead went back to the beginning and followed a completely different family in New York as they experienced the same struggles that occurred from the ‘shifting’ of the moon. I will openly admit that I was a bit disappointed that I wouldn’t be continuing on with Miranda’s story. I enjoyed reading her thoughts and experiencing what she experienced along with her. When everything ended as well as it could (all things considered) I was hopeful that her journey would continue and things would just keep getting better. Or, at the very least, that things would continue to be difficult, but that we’d still be able to experience that journey along with her.So imagine my shock when the narrative changed and I was suddenly hearing about Alex Morales. It was a challenge to adjust to an entire new family, as I had felt like I was part of Miranda’s family, having been with them from the start. Even more, it was challenging to start at the very beginning, right after the moon had been struck, knowing all the terrible things that were to come. Don’t get me wrong, “The Dead & The Gone” was still very good. It was interesting to experience everything from a different perspective, in a different location, with different people and be able to compare their individual journeys. But I will admit (SPOILER ALERT) that the Morales’ journey was even more trying and heartbreaking, in the end. Nevertheless, the entire concept upon which this series resides is extremely interesting, and I will most definitely continue reading the remaining books.On to the next one!

"The Dead and the Gone" is book 2 in a 4-book (so far) series by Susan Beth Pfeffer which she has named "The Last Survivors." I knew from book 1 that the other books in this series would be a treat but I didn't expect Book 2 to be even better than the first. Miranda, the heroine of "Life as We Knew It," is revealed to be very lucky. She comes from a family of four (a mother and three children) all of whom are able to survive in a village in northeast Pennsylvania for ten months. Alex Morales, the hero of "The Dead and the Gone," is part of a family of six (he is the second of four children) living on the Upper West Side in Manhattan of which only three members are alive at the end of the book. The parents drown on the first night, as a result of the very high tides that result from the moon being closer, and the death of one of Alex's siblings (I won't say which one) represents the climax of the book.New York goes to hell in a handbasket; death rises around the protagonists like one of the super-tides pulled by the moon. The collision that pushes the moon closer to the earth takes place in mid-May. By mid-July bodies are being left on the street in the Upper West Side. The last delivery of emergency rations to that part of Manhattan takes place on December 9. The last day chronicled is December 29, by which time New York is almost completely abandoned, as opposed to Howell, Pennsylvania, which still had between a quarter and a sixth of its pre-collision population the following March. Things are worse for Alex than for Miranda because while her family had an enormous stockpile of food, his must leave the house constantly to get food.I thought both the role of both violence and religion during a period of social breakdown were depicted more realistically in this book than in the first, which is the reason I give this book a full five stars. Alex's family is deeply religious and their faith sustains them both literally (they are fed at the parochial school they attend) and spiritually. God and His representatives on earth become the only people Alex can talk to about what he is going through, as he tries to protect his sisters from the full implications of what is happening. Alex's first sister rarely leaves the house after an ill-fated attempt to join a convent, but his second sister becomes a target of men with base desires and nothing to lose by fulfilling them. You know society hasn't completely broken down, however, because social class becomes even more important than it previously was, with the rich and well-connected not having to creep past dead bodies all the time in their part of New York (apparently Midtown), foreshadowing the fourth book, in which (the reviews tell us) a rigid caste system has set in in Tennessee.Book 3, "This World we Live In," brings together the surviving characters from Book 1 and Book 2 and I can't wait to read it. Fortunately, I ordered all of the last three books in the series at the same time from Amazon, so I don't have to. Five stars.

Book 2 in the Life As We Knew It series. This follows another family during approximately the same time as book one. One of the things that I kept wondering about while I read book one, was, how could other people survive if they weren't as wise as Miranda's mom was? In book one, her mom stockpiled canned goods (enough to last well into winter), and made other very wise decisions to keep her family alive. Book 2, The Dead and the Gone deals with Alex, a 17 year old in New York. When the moon is hit, he is living in New York City with his family. His father was out of the country and presumably dead, and his mother most likely died in the flooding of the subway. He finds himself responsible for his 15 year old sister Bri and his 12 year old sister Julie. They don't stockpile canned goods or do the things that Miranda's family does. He still manages to find ways to survive in the city, and they're not always pleasant to think about. His family is far more religious than Miranda's, at least in expression, so this presented another view point, how they looked to the church for help and what help the church could offer. Overall, I enjoyed the book. Alex's sisters grated on my nerves with their reactions to every thing, including his sister Bri's absolute refusal to believe that her parents were dead, but I suppose it was a realistic portrayal. I look forward to reading book 3.

This is the 2nd installment in this series and though while not quite as great as the previous it definitely holds its own. Alex must step up and be the man of the house and tend to his sister's during this apocalyptic event. His parents are missing and presumably dead while his older brother is away in the military when the moon changes due to A meteor shower and catapults New York City into a fend for yourself survival whirlwind. Living off of small for rations and picking through dead bodies Alex must do what's right for his Family. Will they all survive this nightmare?

I thought it would be more specifically geared towards cheerleading. Entire second half of book is like reading a physiology textbook....which I already took in college.

Jessica Zoo did an incredible job of researching every aspect of what and why the body needs what it does to be successful at the sport of Cheerleading. She is excellent at explaining the why’s and how’s of every aspect. Each time I applied one building block, I witnessed inporovements in each of my cheerleaders. However, the most important topic covered i. This book is not the body as much as it is the mind. Jessica Zoo addresses the learning styles of children of all ages as well as coaching styles and how to prevent and overcome mental blocks. I’d definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their skills or the skills of their teams in nearly any sport.

Ha, when I bought this book there were no reviews yet! As there is so little literature written on the subject of Cheerleading, I was really pleased to see this new book. I also found that it had a lot of useful information, some that I already knew and some that I didn't. I did find a lot of spelling errors and typos, but that can all be forgiven since the content is good! I would have liked her to go even deeper into the subjects, giving more examples and concrete applicability. But great resource that I will regularly pull out and refresh myself with. Thanks a lot Jessica!

Jessica is a great instructor who provides excellent insight into building our athletes in a safe & effective way. 5 stars for sure!!

Body Before Skill is an excellent resource for coaches and cheerleaders alike. Even though I have been coaching school cheer for 7 years, we just this year entered our first competition. This book really helped me train my athletes with confidence to increase not only their skillset, but their strength, power, stamina, and flexibility. Any program could benefit from this book!

As a keen dancer, cheerleader and Sport Physiologist this has been a great way to help me hone my knowledge and direct my training more specifically for dance and cheer. It's also been a great tool as a coach and has helped with new ways to implement training during my squads sessions.

I've worked with many different cheer programs and this books really help pinpoint some of the issues that we had with different teams. I'm so happy I ordered this book as I'm starting my own program! This book is giving me great insight to helping build a confident athlete.

The Summer Bridge Activity books have been indispensable in our household for seven years now. They are unparalleled for helping to keep kids on track for the upcoming school year. One simple tear-out worksheet per day is all it takes to maintain skills and help to build them up for the next grade level. Nothing too difficult - it takes our boys maybe 15 minutes a day to complete. But, thanks to the Summer Bridge books, our boys have entered each school year not only having retained what they had learned previously but fortified with new skills and knowledge that give them a stronger start for the next grade level. You simply cannot beat these books.

We have used the Summer Bridge series for all 3 kids for the past 4 years. The books do a great job providing some structured learning for the kids over the summer. Do not expect this to be a summer tutor or be something to advance their skills. What it does well is give your kids some refresher activities to do on a daily/weekly basis just to keep their brains from turning to mush. What we really like about the Summer Bridge series is that there are "extra credit" tasks that really do go beyond their regular lessons, plus there are physical activities for the kids to perform at the end of each week. There are enough lessons to do one every day all summer long - about 15-20 min per page. Or you can group them and have your kids do a couple of hours of work in a block each week. Do not expect this to be something to keep your kids occupied for a couple of hours each day nor should you expect this to teach your kids alot of new things. It is a review / refresher approach that just keeps kids in the habit of engaging their brains!

Can't say enough great things about this workbook. The exercises take just long enough to work the brain, but not so long that they interfere with summer vacation. My son gets right up in the morning and knows he has to do his workbook page while he eats breakfast and before that ps3 gets turned on ;-)I have to say there have been a few things that he has needed help with, that required to dust off my brain a bit.... i.e. FRACTION MATH, but there is an answer key, so I was able to work out the problems and if I got the right answer, I knew I could help him.

Our son has been doing Summer Bridge since he was in 2nd grade, so far it is helps him. He has been in advanced class without forgetting what he learn during the summer. It only have 3 categories and 20 days of work. So, he does not mind to do every day except he is in the camp or during the vacation. Some might not be exactly the same curriculum he did but still covers majority of what he learn. It also helps him to keep the habit of sit down and work thought the summer.

I chose this book on the recommendation of a friend. She had used it to bridge grades 6-7 for all of her children. The daily exercises are not so long that your child will feel overburdened. The comprehensive subject matter is a good review of the 6th grade material already learned and a good primer for what is coming in 7th grade. Just like school, the book starts out fairly simple and increases complexity as it goes along.

My daughter does not complain about doing "homework" during the summer. They are not really activities, but short reviews on math, language arts. The problems refresh what's she's learned and supposed to know. I'm only giving it 4 stars because the answer key is not correct for some of the problems. We didn't realize this at first so of course, spent much time redoing the problems thinking we did them wrong.

I love the summer bridge series, we've bought one every year after a teacher's recommendation. The books are comprehensive and provide a good overview to keep concepts fresh so that "summer mush brain" doesn't effect us as much. Of course there's a little grumbling about having to "work" during the summer, but a couple pages a day between fun family trips and other vacation adventures is reasonable considering the adults have to work year round.

I love this product and so does my daughter! They really do challenge kids and I recommend every parent get for their kids to work on over the summer!

Gary S. Schajer is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. He has extensive experience with residual stress measurements, notably the hole-drilling method using strain gauges, Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI), and Digital Image Correlation (DIC). In 1942-1943 Commander Bell (USNA 1924) commanded USS Grayson (DD 435) through some of the most intense action of the Pacific War. (He retired as a R. Admiral in 1947 after further wartime command tours and tours at BUPERS.) Back in the U.S. in mid-1943 he wrote this book, before the memories faded. I read it not long after and I recall vividly how it helped to shape my determination to become a naval officer.To think of this as a book of military history can be misleading; it's a personal experience of war from the perspective of a unit commander. He knew little of U.S. plans less of the enemy's, and writing in 1943 he had no way of knowing how it would all end. But if you want to know what it was really like then this is a great book.

The author says it best. Life on a WW2 Destroyer is 90% boredom and 10% bloodshed.That said its easy to find books about the 10%, but if you, like myself have always been curious about the daily goings on, the other 90%, then this is the book for you. Bell tells a very descriptive and no doubt very accurate accounting of the many different responsibilities your average sailor and officer is forced to learn and know by heart, many of which he hopes never to actually have to perform, most of these under dire circumstances. Having spent many hours at sea I can only imagine how warfare can complicate and compromise the already taxing job of running a large ocean going vessel. If anything this book increased the already great respect I have " for those in peril on the sea ."Despite a larger than normal number of typo errors, I would have given this book 3.5 stars if able.

I have been reading books about WWII, written by the participants. I really liked this book. The author takes you with him where-ever he goes. There is nothing stuffy between the covers. You meet many individuals, all working together to overcome difficulties. The author talks to you as a friend, and you see much of the day-to-day activities that make up the majority of the time spent in the service. You are introduced to many of his friends, shipmates, and commanders. They come alive as real, everyday people. The only negative comment that I have is that it ended rather too abruptly. The period covers the Solomon Islands activities. After Guadacanal, it abruptly ends. I would have liked to continue on. I imagine this gives you an idea on how good the publication is.

I'm so glad I read this important personal account of the history of what it was like to be on a destroyer in WWII. It captures the flavor of the men in that era -- including some things which by today's standards we might not express in the same way (for example his depiction of black sailors or soldiers, and the slang used in naming the enemy in that time period).I only give 4 instead of 5 stars because I would like to have read more details of particular engagements and tactics and less of his personal interactions with friends, but it's obvious that he was constrained by military rules of the time (he can't even give the name of the destroyer he commanded) and also that his friends were important to him - if not to history overall.Still, this is an invaluable window into the actual life and times and events and boredom during a heroic struggle against forces that threatened to oppress the world, and the bravery of those who stood on the decks of the 'fightingist ships.'

“Condition Red” is about the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Grayson DD-435 and her actions in the Solomon Islands area from May 1942 to early 1943. The account is written firsthand by Grayson’s Commanding Officer, LCDR Frederick J. Bell. The reader gets to know the ship, learns some naval history, and meets several members of the crew through this narrative. You are transferred for a while to the hot, damp, and often hostile area of the South Pacific during the early years of that war. The book is well written, and very entertaining. The Grayson was a great ship with a great crew. This is a great addition to my naval library. Grayson had just returned from Task Force 38 (the Doolittle Raid) and with a new Skipper, was reassigned to the Guadalcanal area for the next 8 months. Besides being a famous ship, she was built here at the Charleston Naval Shipyard (where I used to work) in 1940 and received 13 Battle Stars and a Navy Unit Commendation (Task Force 38) for her services in WWII. The book sits beside my model of this ship.I was pleased to find this book and rate it 5 stars for the entertainment and information I was able to gather from the volume.

This is an excellent memoir about life about a destroyer in World War 2. Written during the War, it is a day-to-day chronicle what life was like for the sailors and officers onboard the U.S.S. Grayson (referred to only as the G due to wartime censorship). You get a good idea of what morale was like and the hopes, fears, duties, and diversions of the crew. You also get a participant's eye view of various destroyer battles. Bell's prose is descriptive and captures the reader. However, there are a few times when he meanders from a straight chronological story and jumps to recollections of a different ship. You can tell that you are reading something akin to an officer's journal. But, go with it, it's a good read. You can get accounts of set piece named battles in more conventional history books. This book is about the feel of war for the sailors who were in it.

"Condition Red" by Frederick Bell describes battle action aboard the Navy Destroyer "G", during the early days of WWII in the Solomon Islands. It describes the shipboard life as well as the combat activity of the crew. One of the most excellent books of its kind.I like to peruse book authors to view their bios, but this book, written in 1943, had zero information. I Googled the author and found out that Bell retired from the Navy as an Admiral. For action in the South Pacific he was awarded the Navy Cross, one step below the Medal of Honor, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart. The Destroyer mysteriously referred to as "G" was the USS Grayson. After getting out of the Navy, he was a business executive and an Episcopal priest. He died in 1994 at the age of 91
