I bought this book in the summer of 2015, studied it, and then traveled the first 60 or 70 miles of the trail (from Old Forge, New York to Long Lake, New York) with my 19-year-old son. We had the trip of a lifetime, traveling at a leisurely pace in two kayaks, and I would strongly recommend this book and this journey to anyone interested in canoe and/or kayak trips. I plan to continue doing additional sections of this lovely route each summer -- it's that good. The Adirondacks are pretty, full of wild places and cute towns, and the swimming and fishing were tremendous. We caught fish every day, swam in every lake, and found ample camping everywhere we were.Before stumbling upon this book, I'd never heard of this route. I was surprised by how little publicity this route has had, since I've read quite a lot about many of the other through-paddling-routes in North America. As for hiking routes, the Appalachian Trail and Pacific Crest Trail have so many books written about them, and kayaking routes through the San Juan Islands and canoe routes in the Boundary Waters are known by many. This NFCT is a lesser known trail, having been pioneered just in the past 20 years. This newness is not a detractor, however, as the trail is very well thought out and sign posted along the way. Small towns have nice sign boards marking the route, complete with info bulletins and maps, and the various carries are well marked.The book is composed by multiple through-paddlers, all of whom offer various insights about the route, fishing, plants, wind, etc. It's a great joint-venture and a substantial, interesting read.A note on the carries/portages: As two pretty strong guys, we found some of the carries quite challenging. Partly, this was because we didn't bring wheeled-carriers with us. It was also partly because we insisted on carrying both boats in a single trip. However, let me just suggest that you plan your route with attention paid to the length and number of carries on your trip. You can easily find sections of this route with very few and short carries. You can also find sections with many .5 to 1.5 mile long carries. So planning is crucial if you don't want to carry your stuff too much. Of course, the entire route requires about 50 miles of over-land travel, but if you're doing the entire route you're tough and ready for that, right?Note that there is a very detailed NFCT website that you can access online. On that site, detailed maps and route information is easily accessible. The book is more of a narrative about the trail, however, and I see the book as a very valuable supplement to what is online.A note about maps: After studying my copy of this book, I went out to EMS to try to find some detailed maps. Yes, there are detailed paper maps that correspond to every leg of this journey. However, I found the maps for the New York State portion of the trail to be a bit expensive for me. If you have the money, buy the maps -- they're nice. If you're a bit cheaper, you might end up doing what I did which was to buy a copy of the New York State Recreation Atlas (National Geographic Map). I simply tore out the pages that covered the part of the route we were doing, then carried those pages in a couple of ZipLoc bags. These maps were great and we never got lost.Any problems with the book? We found the book very useful. In fact, it was indispensable. However, there were of course things we discovered for ourselves along the route. For instance, one carry early on in the route (just 12 miles from Old Forge) ended up being unnecessary to do, as we were able to scoot and push our boats up a little beaver-dammed creek, walking via the stream in a spot that the book's authors told us to carry our boats. This ended up being very fun for us, but I share this just as a reminder to any reader that this book is a guide that should be taken as something other than a 100% perfect "how-to" for this trip. Lakes that are described as windy ended up being calm for us, and vice-versa -- but that all added to the adventure and sense of discovery. Cross reference your reference materials and you'll do great.

I wish it included the contact details for the groceries, bakeries, B&Bs, and other services it refers to, so they are readily available while off and on the trail.I enjoyed reading the book and planning for my first trip on the trail. I encourage you to plan a trip too. Stay safe and wear a life jacket.

Now that the detailed guide is out and in conjunction with the NFCT maps and on-line assistance a trip to plan and meet your customized needs or preferances has become a lot of fun. While all this information may take a little of the wilderness out of the trip, it allows the experience to be both safer and rewarding: as long as you do it.

It was helpful to read about the portion of the trail that I was going to be paddling. The one issue I had was that the description didn't reveal any challenges with rocks and rapids during lower water levels in an upper portion of the segment described as a "family paddle". My canoe took quite a beating on the rocks.

For me trip planning goes through distinct stages. The Northern Forest Canoe Trail guidebook addresses each stage.Initially I explore destination ideas, then narrow in on a region, then focus on the trip I can do with time and resources available. Introductory text in the guide provides a sweeping overview of the region, including human and natural history. Now I'm hooked on the idea. The authors have done the work for me in narrowing the trips with a handy listing by categories such as "for families or beginners," "wildlife-viewing trips," and "paddling-hiking/biking combinations."Time for packing and logistical details. They have a pre-trip planning section and trip put-in/put-out information.On the water, suddenly that boring to read at home text of the route details (e.g., "...approach to the dam, which is dangerous because of exposed metal rebar in the river...") is the center of my focus! Critical point by critical point, the guide helps me make safe route choices and alerts me to interesting features I might otherwise miss.The waterproof section maps (sold separately) complement the book.This book was written by several authors, each sharing their expertise for segments of the route. All write well and the guide flows together nicely; however, at least one is an exceptional writer.My only suggestion for improvement would be that the guidebook be plastic spiral bound so it could rest open within a zip-lock plastic bag for field use. I don't want to be thumbing for the right route section each time I review the guide while underway.

This book has great ideas, however, is dry and repetitive.Once I got my hands on the BLW Cookbook, I was really upset about the amount of time I wasted reading this book.Do yourself a favor and skip to the Baby-Led Weaning Cookbook.The ENTIRE Baby-Led Weaning book is summarized in the first chapter of the cookbook.

While I do like the baby led weaning and will be doing my own version of it I felt buying this book about it was a waste of time and money. It is very clear the author wanted to make a book to make $ because there is so much fluff and unrelated information in the book. A whole book on baby-led weaning is just not necessary as the concept is very simple- let your baby feed themselves at their own pace. The main points could have been summed up in a pamphlet so a book was just overkill. Save your money- do a little internet research and you will find everything you need to know about baby-led weaning.

This book effectively debunks the idea that all babies must be force-fed pureed food--and thank God for that because who wants to force-feed a baby?Instead, the author (Gill Rapley, PhD) provides a fresh perspective on when and how babies have started eating table foods, both historically and in other cultures around the world. The gist: at six months of age, babies start experimenting with food like they do with any new toy. Eventually, they taste the food and begin eating it for nourishment. As moms, we can trust that their babies have a natural instinct as to what to eat and how much. Our job, then, is to provide the most nourishing options available in a safe and pleasant environment.No commercially-prepared baby foods. No blending purees for hours on end. No fighting with babies at the dinner table. This sounds great to me!If you're a mom of a baby, or you're expecting a child, I highly recommend this book!

Wish I had followed advice online and skipped this book and gone straight to the cookbook. Everything she tells you in here you could find for free online. There are several Facebook groups. I need recipe ideas, not provided in this book.

I'm a huge proponent of this method of introducing foods. I was completely overwhelmed with the modern day "techniques" of introducing cereals, then purees, but only 1 color at a time and for at least 3 or 4 days to see if the child has a reaction, etc. My husband and I were out of the house 12-13 hours a day, I was breastfeeding and pumping full time, the LAST thing I needed to make my life more complicated were food rules that I honestly found to be counterintuitive. I mean, how did my parents teach me how to eat? Certainly not with so many restrictions and I turned out just fine. A friend mentioned this book and I immediately purchased it and read it cover to cover on my long daily commute. It just made so much sense. Kids can eat what we eat. Duh. Although we did feed our daughter some homemade purees (mostly because they were easily transportable snacks for daycare), I never worried about much else. We gave her what we ate from day 1 and not in a pureed form. I did make sure things were in slightly smaller pieces than recommended in the book (for instance, I wouldn't just throw a whole veggie burger on her high chair tray, I'd break it up into pieces easy to pick up), but ultimately, we let our daughter figure food out for herself.By 8 months old, she was using a fork, eating whole foods and would devour anything we'd give her. She couldn't roll over or sit up without assistance (that's a whole other story), but she could use a fork and devour a sandwich. I never had to prepare her different dinners or meals, we never had to spend a ton of money on baby food and we were extremely comfortable with the food she was eating because we were eating the same things. And now at 2.5 years old, she has an incredibly expansive palate. I don't know if it was because we used this method or because our daughter may've just been predisposed to be an amazing eater, but she loves any and all food. I mean, this kid eats salad almost every night. One of her favorite meals is curried lentils with poached eggs.There are few things about parenting that I feel confident about, but this is definitely one of them. If you are at all overwhelmed with all the food rules of today, maybe give this a shot. You might be pleasantly surprised at how easy and how fun feeding your baby can be!

Posted originally on my blog: [...]I forgot how easy it was to sit down with a Baby-sitters Club book and just finish it in one sitting. This is probably one of the reasons I loved the series as a little girl. The other reason lay with the girls themselves. Despite how much or how little I liked each character, they all had at least one thing that resonated with the young girl I was.Mary Anne Spier is actually the first member of The Baby-sitters Club that I was introduced to and she always remained one of my favorites. Despite the fact I was more like Kristy Thomas, I found something comforting about how sensitive Mary Anne could be and how loving she was towards her friends. Whenever trouble stirs up within the group, she’s usually the one trying to maintain the peace.This is especially apparent in this first story based around Mary Anne. After months of little things bothering them (i.e. people not offering jobs, people being rude, etc.) the girls find themselves at odds with one another after a huge blow up. Surprisingly, the adult in me didn’t spend the entire book rolling my eyes at the drama between the girls. Because, even now, as an adult, I know how easily one little argument, disagreement or misunderstanding can blow up into a huge fight. Besides, I remember the petty fights my friends and I had at the age and no matter how stupid it was, we let them drag on and on and on.This particular fight actually serves as a positive thing for Mary Anne and in the end, the entire club. For Mary Anne, it forces her out of her comfort zone. For too long, she’s hidden behind Kristy and Claudia. She’s shy and never makes it a point to befriend people other than those who are friends with her friends. But when this fight leaves her sitting all alone in the cafeteria, she finds the courage to befriend a new girl, Dawn Schafer. Not only does it open her up to making a new friend, but it allows her an opportunity to find her own voice. Especially in regards to sticking up for herself with her friends and ultimately her father, who still treats her like a little girl.Once everything is said and done, the girls manage to make up and find themselves with a new member in their midst. Meanwhile, Mary Anne’s father allows her to rid herself of the childish braids, choose her own clothing (within reason, obviously) and even have a later curfew for babysitting. True, the stories of these girls aren’t going to become classical fiction like Little Women or Little House on the Prairie did, but they had an impact on my childhood and I love having the opportunity to try and recapture that feeling.

My daughter hates reading because she is dyslexic. I was SOOOOOOO happy when we found these at Barnes and Nobles. My daughter has regained so much confidence now that she can read with pictures again (at age 12). I read all of these when I was her age (no pix) and I REALLY wish they sold them in a big set so she can start with #1 and move forward without me having to buy each one.

My 9-year-old semi-reluctant reader adores this series (full-color version!) and ate it up. Hard to get her to put it down. I remember the original Babysitters Club series from when I was a kid; everybody loved it. This is a great modernization and great illustrations for great tween-girl stories.

My daughter has struggled with reading for several years. This book, because of the "comic book" version it is written in has her reading independently and with enthusiasm for the first time. I hope they continue with the rest of the series because if they do I will buy them ALL for her.

My 9 year old daughter loves these graphic novel books! We were so sad to learn that they are only making 4 of this series in graphic novels. Cute story line- same as the ones I read when I was a kid. These books are great for the kids who are still al little intimidated by a regular chapter book and for the ones who love to see pictures with what they are reading.

As a kid I read all the original Babysitters Club books. My daughter loves graphic novels, and mentioned these to me. I was confused at first after she said I got the wrong babysitters club book for her. It turns out these were redone for the current generation. I read some of it and it is really cool how the story is the same, but edited down and in comic form. My daughter really likes some of Raina Telgemeier's other graphic novels; Drama, Sisters, and Smile. I am not surprised she loves these. I also like that they are half the price on Amazon than at the store. I'm glad the stories I loved as a girl my daughter now loves, even if they are different.

I trust them when they say that this is a great book from a great author to study. However, it is not light reading. I would probably not get from the book what I am getting from just reading it by myself. It is a great study book.

This is a great book on the Apostle's Creed! Its more in depth than Adam Hamilton's book on the creed (which is a good study material as well), but it is also accessible to the non-academic. But then that shouldn't be surprising because that's the way that Gonzalez writes.

It's a textbook.

Helped a lot with my RCIA presentations

This well written book is excellent to use as a group study/discussion guide. The writing is clear and exhibits clarity and accuracy. I am acquainted with some other works by this author and can highly recommend his writing.

Interesting analysis of The Creed I enjoyed reading it.

My church small group is using this wonderful book as our first study book this fall. Though we have just begun, we find the questions at the end of each chapter help us to focus not only on our reading, but also on our group discussion. We look forward to considering more of the "For Today" series in future studies.
