Review

“Raymond Arroyo masterfully captures the complexities, humanity, and tenacity of Mother Angelica, who has long been one of my own personal heroes. The founder of the Eternal Word Television Network, Mother Angelica is a woman who dared to dream, to stand up for what she believed in, and whose faith showed that anything is possible. In Arroyo’s hands, she becomes someone you wish you had the opportunity to know and love. Read this book and believe.” —Nicholas Sparks, New York Times bestselling author“In this dramatic page-turner, Raymond Arroyo has captured the life and lessons of Mother Angelica, a woman who may well be the patron saint of CEOs. Buy this book and be inspired.” —Lee Iacocca, The Iacocca Foundation, former chief executive officer of the Chrysler Corporation“Mother Angelica’s personal words to me, her courageous example, and her constant prayers helped inspire my portrayal of Jesus in The Passion of the Christ. No one could have captured the essence of this modern-day saint better than Raymond Arroyo. His narrative gifts and understanding of Mother are clearly evident in this truthful and often candid depiction of one nun’s struggle to bring God to the multitudes. Surely this book, and Mother’s life will have an incredible enduring legacy.” —James Caviezel, actor“Mother Angelica is one of the greatest entrepreneurs of all time, and is truly one of my heroes. With his “insider” perspective, Raymond Arroyo has done a masterful job capturing not only Mother’s immeasurable accomplishments but also her remarkable personality. Like Mother herself, this book has the unique combination of being both inspiring and entertaining.” —Thomas S. Monaghan, founder of Domino’s Pizza and Chancellor of Ave Maria University “This is some woman. What a wonderful story Raymond Arroyo has written—wonderful because it’s true, because he got the facts, because she chose him to tell them, and because he’s a born storyteller.” —Peggy Noonan, author of When Character Was King“A rattling good story of fear, faith, courage, and bulldog tenacity, beautifully told. The drama of Mother Angelica’s life is a powerful reminder that the extraordinary lies just beyond the ordinary—if we have eyes to see and ears to hear.” —George Weigel, author of Witness to Hope: The Biography of Pope John Paul II

From the Inside Flap

In 1981, the year after Ted Turner founded CNN, a simple nun launched the world's first Catholic cable channel in the garage of a Birmingham, Alabama, monastery, using her entrepreneurial instincts and $200 for seed money. Under her guidance, the Eternal Word Television Network grew by leaps and bounds. Today, EWTN offers twenty-four-hour television programming and AM/FM radio broadcasts in both English and Spanish, reaching more than 184 million viewers and listeners in 160 countries. Raymond Arroyo's engrossing biography, reads like a novel. Born Rita Rizzo in Canton, Ohio, in 1923, she was abandoned by her father and raised in poverty by a mother who suffered suicidal depressions. As a young woman, Rita developed severe abdominal pain and large protrusions. After doctors dismissed the problems as a "nervous" condition, Rita sought the prayers of a local mystic, and her symptoms disappeared. Awakened to the power of prayer, she vowed to dedicate her life to God. She became a cloistered nun, expecting to spend her life hidden from the world. But her faith compelled her to unlikely endeavors, from establishing a monastery in Alabama to starting the network. Relying solely on "God's providence," Mother Angelica built the empire without concern for budgets or fund-raising campaigns. She had accomplished what the highest echelon of the Catholic Church had been unable to do.

Beautifully written story of a brave strong woman well ahead of her time

Well-written story of Mother Angelica's life including all the ups and downs and told with compassion and love. In a tell-it-like-it-is-style, Raymond Arroyo presented a full picture of this holy yet totally human woman. I watched her on EWTN toward the later years before her final seclusion and credit her and the network she built as pillars of support that helped me come to understand and embrace the Catholic faith. It took ten years and solid 5-year stint of watching the Coming Home show every Monday night but I finally and happily made the decision. Reading this book rounded out my understanding of Mother Angelica and all she accomplished. This is an even-handed representation of all that occurred, and I definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to know more about Mother Angelica. The good writing and sensitive style and strong narration is a bonus!

It's ironic but I purchased this for my Kindle several weeks before Mother Angelica passed away and I was hooked from the very beginning! I'm not yet finished (not because I'm a slow reader but have had so much on my plate!). I didn't start watching EWTN until Mother Angelica had her stroke but watched some of the other programs and I caught some of her classics. Once I began reading this, I was enthralled! Raymond Arroyo is a very good writer and that combined with Mother's wonderful humor makes for a terrific book and one that has helped my faith. I have had much illness in my life and also in my son's, and the courage and how she handled her illness has really helped me. I am really enjoying watching her "classics" on EWTN and love some of the other programs. It's truly remarkable what this wonderful woman has accomplished and how God has always come through for her. Her examples are helping me so much in dealing with illness and I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone! Like a number of Catholics, I had been away from my faith for quite some time, but had come back to Catholicism and in this day and age, I have developed a deep love for my faith. Mother, I am sure you and your programming are helping a lot of people (not just Catholics) find their way in a troubled world. As St. John Paul the Great often said "Be not afraid." God has always come through for me. I realized I was at Easter Mass when Mother died. How appropriate!

TEN STARS!!! There are no words I could ever write that would tell you how this remarkable woman Mother Angelica, has impacted my life. When her death was reported, I knew I had to buy this book. During the week after her promotion to heaven I was amazed at the things I didn't know. Thus buying the book was important, especially watching Raymond Arroyo guide us through our grieving. He was blessed with a gift for writing. This book will be a precious gem for all who read it. I intend to use it for my own faith development. I've lost count of how many times I've read it cover to cover. When I finish I just start over again. It's like studying the Bible. It seems to find and help me with my own walk all the time. Raymond just simply tells her story in her own words skillfully sewn together like a beautiful tapestry. Raymond's 3 other books on Mother Angelica have now arrived and continue to be a blessing. I've preordered the fifth book on her grand silence. He needs to add a sixth on her legacy as another American Saint!

This is the perfect book to read if you have been thinking of mother after her passing on Easter Sunday. There is so much to know about her personal life and the challenges she had setting up the EWTN television/radio network. The inside politics that the US Bishops exerted was shocking. Many Bishops up to the day she passed, believed they were in the right and Mother Angelica had behaved improperly. Her death on Easter Sunday is a sobering reminder for them to revisit their past actions and reconsider if they have contradicted the Lord's wishes.I thoroughly enjoyed the book and I found a new respect for this woman and the life she chose to embrace.A

This is a well written account of someone whose trust in and devotion to God, has no limit. I was greatly heartened to hear of this poor kid from the wrong side of the tracks besting overstuffed Bishops, at least two of whom were later exposed for their far from saintly behavior. The two millennium old Church has produced the greatest saints and greatest sinners (she I believe will fall among the saints). The Catholic Church USA is a classic example of what happens when people in charge lie and dissemble to try and achieve an agenda that the majority of their members disagrees with, and live a personal life which makes a mockery of morality. If you're looking for a book where the good guy (gal) wins and proves that yes God can cast down the arrogant and raise up the humble, this is it. After seeing what one elderly sick nun can accomplish I don't think the Catholic Church could go wrong (as it has), if it required ALL of its Bishops to be part of a monastic community and take a vow of personal poverty...

I couldn't put this book down! It inspired me and gave me hope that our God loves us so much that he gave us this intrepid woman -- this modern-day saint! -- to renew the Faith in these troubled times. There are so many miraculous events that happened when Mother Angelica determined to carry out God's will, no matter the personal cost, and despite opposition by some in high-ranking positions within the Church, that one can't help but believe that it was really God Himself who founded EWTN, . She lived by her motto, "Do the ridiculous so that God can do the miraculous," and the fruits of her living out this motto are so manifest throughout the book! If I could give this book more than 5 stars, I would!
