I would have given three and a half stars if that were possible.I liked the dialogue and most of the unfolding of the plot.However, I thought the characters too one sided - too too bitchy, too good, etc. I know the author was following the Lear story but still...And, as a Trinidadian, I was irritated by some inaccuracies. For example, none of the song snippets are Parang.And I was let down by the happy-ever-after ending.I preferred Prospero's Daughter.

I thoroughly enjoy this book
It's nice to see how to help kids learn but this book is too full of micro-management of students. I don't think that's necessary. It misses teaching them how to learn and how to study on their own and use their time effectively and efficiently. It overly coddles the students as if they're all morons. That can't be right. The things we are taught in high school are not the difficult at all.
I have not been able to read the book yet but lent it to a friend who really enjoyed it.
This novel was a treat to read - not just as a well plotted story - but as an example of what prose looks like when an accomplished writer is at the helm. All the plot threads are connected, all the characters are realistic, and the techniques Nunez uses to tell the story works well at conveying what she wants the reader to "see". It's not only a good story, but its an example of good writing.
