Not one symbol in the whole book. I thought I would be given some symbols and an explanation of what that symbol means. Glad I spent just a few pennies on this stupid book. Just avoid it.
A very good, comprehensive review of all the major symbols in the Craft, elegantly written (probably because it's Victorian-Era). Also includes extensive notes and a helpful alphabetical glossary of expanded reflections on the book's major themes. I've been using it as my source for a "Masonic Word of the Month" on my Trestleboard the whole of my year in the East.
One of the most readable, comprehensive and respected woks on symbolism - not just Masonic symbolism - but symbolism generally. A must read.
Great info, just a hard read ....my college education did not prepare me for the words obtained in this book. Spend more time looking up the words than reading the book.
I Enjoyed the book , there are elements and ideas in the text which needs to be understood beyond the normal and acceptable convention of Masonic analysis.This is a book not for the beginners , I would recommend it though for much seasoned masons.
i enjoyed this book. he really explained the symbolism of many parts of masonry. he goes back into history and looks at similar incidents besides the masonic ones. it is very thorough. and Mackey is easy to understand, not like trying to read Pike. i would highly recommend this book.
Would be Good addition to your Masonic Library.
The Symbolism of Freemasonry is a collection of essays by Mackey where he gives his view of many things Masonic. It's tough to read because of the 1800s writing style and archaic language. I am a senior English teacher, and I had difficulty getting through the book. I am usually a fan of Mackey, but this read more like Pike wrote it.
